Mercedes-Benz is a
German luxury automotive brand producing consumer and commercial
cars, SUVs, trucks, and vans. The company is a subsidiary of Daimler AG, a Stüttgart-based multinational corporation whose stock symbol is
DMLRY.
Though Mercedes-Benz didn't come together as a company until 1926, it began with German engine designer and automobile engineer Carl Benz. In 1886, he invented the single-cylinder Motorwagen, the first car powered by petrol. Thanks to his wife, Bertha, the Motorwagen gained worldwide attention when she drove it a long distance.
In the early 1950s, the automaker sold its first car in the United States — the
300SL Gullwing. And since 1995, the company has had a production plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. It's the first large-scale facility of its kind outside of Germany, where most Mercedes vehicles are made.
Today,
Mercedes-Benz is one of the most recognized luxury vehicle brands in the world. Its subsidiaries include
