Will Mercedes Ever Sell Another Convertible G-Wagon?
With the new release of the new Ford Bronco and the allure of its topless capability, other designated off-road vehicles might want to start taking notes. Certain 4×4 off-road SUVs like the Toyota 4Runner or the Land Rover Defender probably won’t ever see a convertible model. But the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon has already done it with the G-Class Cabriolet. Will Mercedes ever sell another convertible G-Wagon?
The idea of a Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon with a convertible or doorless option sounds pretty cool. But will it ever actually come to fruition? It’s hard to say for sure, but here’s what we think.
The market success of the new Ford Bronco might be an influencer

The Ford Bronco comes with the ability to provide an “open air” experience, according to Ford. The success of the new 4-door Bronco and 2021 2-door Ford Bronco could influence others in the market to adapt accordingly. If the Ford Bronco sales show wild success––no pun intended––then there may be good reason for other automakers to follow suit.
We might see a few copy cats on the horizon. The Mercedes-Benz G-wagon is one of the most sturdy and off-road-capable SUVs out there. Though it is a high priced luxury version, it’s still in pretty direct competition. There’s a chance that the Mercedes team may end up deciding that upping the ante when it comes to their competition with the Bronco is worthwhile. That could mean bringing back a new G-Class model like the Cabriolet version we saw back in the day.

How much is a new Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon?
In terms of pricing, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class is incredibly pricey. It’s definitely a status-symbol type vehicle. This is one of the biggest differences between the Mercedes Benz G-Class and the all-new Ford Bronco family. You can order a new Bronco, and expect to pay a price as low as a bit under $30 grand. Even other 4×4 SUVs like the Toyota 4Runner will around $40 grand. The Mercedes-Benz G-Class 4×4 off-road SUV is a different story.

To buy a new G-Wagon, you’re looking at a base MSRP of $127,650, according to US News and World Report. US News writes “that’s far and away the highest starting price in our luxury large SUV class.” We have to say, it is pretty steep. If you’ve driven one of these, you know that this is also far and away one of the best driving and most capable 4×4 off-road SUVs. That said, it’s still not a justifiable price for most.

Will there be another convertible?
According to Classic Driver, in 2013 Mercedes-Benz ran a final edition release of 200 Cabriolet convertible G-Wagons. They were all spoken for quickly, and today it’s very hard to find one. They will all cost at least about as much as it would cost to buy a G-Class 4×4 off-road SUV new, as well.

It’s hard to say whether or not another convertible G-Wagon will release in modern markets. However, they have seen success with the model in the past. So, it’s probably safe to assume we could see one roll out into production at some point in the future––especially if sales of the Bronco are hugely successful.
