The Jeep Cherokee is a compact SUV model produced and sold by the Jeep division of Stellantis (formerly Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA)). The Jeep Cherokee is priced and sized between the Jeep Compass and Grand Cherokee SUVs.
The first Jeep Cherokee model was released in 1974 as a full-size SUV model with a two-door or four-door wagon body based on the Jeep Wagoneer. The introduction of the second generation of the Jeep Cherokee in 1984 is widely thought to be the first modern iteration of the SUV (sport utility vehicle.
The third and fourth generations of the Jeep Cherokee were marketed and sold under the Jeep Liberty nameplate in North America. They were poorly received by critics and received mediocre sales numbers. This led to the redesigned fifth generation of the model, which debuted at the 2013 New York International Auto Show with the returned Cherokee nameplate.
Still in its fifth generation, the Jeep Cherokee model receives reliable competition from the Chevy Equinox, the Ford Escape, the Hyundai Santa Fe, the Subaru Forester and Outback, and the Volkswagen Tiguan.
