The Jeep Grand Cherokee is Transforming Into A Family SUV
Forget what you know about the Jeep Grand Cherokee because it’s transforming into a family SUV. Some people have joked about not having the Jeep Wrangler because they needed a soccer mom Jeep instead, but the 2022 Jeep Cherokee will have you driving around in style.
The three-row Jeep Grand Cherokee is coming
Currently, the Jeep Grand Cherokee is an excellent option if you can all fit in a midsize SUV. Once you need room for all of the kids, friends, and even the dog, you start running into problems. As Edmunds put it, the Jeep Grand Cherokee has less cargo space than rivals.
There are 36.3 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and up to 68.3cubic feet of cargo space total. This can limit room for luggage, pet crates, camping gear, and more.

But Edmunds also noted that the storage bins were versatile for storage, and the cargo floor has an excellent loading height. Also, the tow package and V8 engine allow you tow up to 7,200 lb.
Another potential issue for families with the Jeep Grand Cherokee is the weak fuel economy. It only gets up to 19 mpg in the city and up to 26 mpg on the highway. That can put a damper on daily driving to after school practices, vacations, and more.
The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee will be better for families
However, to fix these issues, the Jeep Grand Cherokee is being transformed into a three-row SUV. Inspiration may have come from the Kia Telluride and Dodge Durango, which are popular family options with a little off-roading capability.
From spy shots of the new, longer Jeep Grand Cherokee that’s heavily camouflaged, all we can determine so far is that it looks much longer. The third-row seats will allow for more passengers and create more cargo space for families.
It looks like a smaller Jeep Grand Cherokee that’s been stretched out. The 2022 family Jeep Grand Cherokee will offer a longer wheelbase and a higher ground clearance. The tailgate will be larger to make loading up easier too.
To remain competitive against rivals, the new Jeep Grand Cherokee will have to be able to tow more weight. Hopefully, it will be able to tow up to 6,000 lb to be a reasonable option against larger SUVs like the Chevy Tahoe.
Also, Jeep has announced that each of their models will be offered with a hybrid powertrain by 2022, which means that the hybrid Jeep Grand Cherokee with three-rows will be competitive against the coveted Ford Explorer hybrid.
2022 Grand Jeep Cherokee features
The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee is expected to be a family off-roader. Like the Toyota 4Runner and Sequoia, the Cherokee will be a tremendous off-roading option to take the entire family camping with.
The Jeep Grand Wagoneer may make its debut in 2022 too. However, it’s expected to be more of a luxurious three-row SUV for driving on the pavement. There is no word about which option will be cheaper but go with the Cherokee for more off-roading capabilities.
There will be a midsize Jeep Grand Cherokee as well, offering a sporty option for those who don’t need three rows of seats. We expect to see these new Jeep SUVs by the summer of 2021 and can’t wait to learn more.
