The 2001 BMW E39 M5 currently listed on Bring a Trailer represents a bargain of an iconic sports sedan that should also be fairly reliable.

The most reliable used BMW M cars aren't completely problem-free, but there's a preventative fix available for virtually every potential issue.

According to BMW expert shop Enthusiast Auto Group, the most reliable used M cars are the E39 M5, Z3 and Z4 M Coupe/Roadster, E36 M3, and 2004-2006 E46 M3.

The 2000-2003 E39 M5 remains not just a beloved example of BMW at its best, but one of the best-driving sedans you can buy. And while this near-classic sports sedan has some faults, arguably its biggest problem is how much it costs today.

Even if you don't get the M5, the E39 BMW 5 Series is still a comfortable cruiser that can more than handle itself as a sports sedan in the corners. And you can still get affordable examples like the 2003 530i with the Sport Package currently listed on Cars & Bids.

The BMW 5 Series and Genesis G80 both received minor updates in 2022 following refreshed in 2021. And while the 5 Series has the performance and handling edge, the G80 strikes hard with style, comfort, and value. Picking between these two luxury sedans, therefore, depends on which matters more to you.

The E39 BMW M5 is considered one of the brand's high-water marks from the early 2000s and hailed by many as one of the best-driving luxury sedans ever made. And there's a 2000 example currently listed on Cars & Bids at a bargain price.
