Matthew Skwarczek started blogging in 2015 and focuses his writing on motorcycles and engineering science. A graduate of Northwestern University, where he earned his Master’s in Chemical Engineering, Matthew served as an applications engineer for BASF before joining MotorBiscuit in 2019.
In Matthew’s words, the visceral nature of riding requires you to be in the moment. Combined with his fascination in the analytics surrounding the building and designing of cars and bikes, both modern and classic, you’ll find his voice blends functionality and phenomena. He rides motorcycles and bicycles often, photographing them as well.
Matthew has contributed to Oppositelock and is now an alumnus. He plays Dungeons & Dragons and reads sci-fi and fantasy in his spare time, and appreciates the works of Peter Egan, Sam Smith, Brandon Sanderson, and Alex Goy.
Summer heat requires more from your car than just swapping on dry-weather performance tires. Although it isn’t a usual maintenance item, your car’s A/C can also degrade over time. And no one wants to be stuck in a hot car while you’re going on a road trip. One of the simplest ways to keep cool …
While restomodding can be expensive, it is a great way to keep a classic car enjoyable on the road for longer. However, even though many restomod companies strip the donor cars down to the bare metal, not every donor will do. That’s the unfortunate part of classic car care: sometimes, restoring them isn’t possible. But …
Skimping out money-wise isn’t really recommended for most car maintenance items. That’s not to say you always have to buy the most expensive racing-spec brake pads and rotors. But for the most part, spending a little more will generally improve quality and performance. However, does that really apply to something as seemingly simple as windshield …
The modern café racer trend arguably got its start with the Ducati Sport 1000. But Honda actually beat the Italian motorcycle company to it by a few decades. And the Honda GB500 Tourist Trophy didn’t just ape the styling of the 50s and 60s racers. In some ways, it’s arguably a more-accurate throwback than anything …
Some supercars, even Ferraris, can be reliable with a little care. The Lamborghini Gallardo, though, isn’t usually included in such a list. That’s despite the fact that it shares a platform and powertrain with the first-gen Audi R8. Which admittedly, isn’t necessarily that good of a daily driver. But does that mean the Lamborghini Gallardo …
Driving wears away at your car, and not just through paint chips and scratches. Your tires work through friction, and eventually, they’re worn to the point they need replacement. Normally, that takes tens of thousands of miles, especially with regular rotation. But if you’re replacing your tires after just a few months, you may need …
Quite a few so-called scrambler motorcycles have the style, but not a lot of off-road substance. The Ducati Scrambler Desert Sled, though, isn’t one of them. And just like Triumph did with its Scrambler, the Italian company has shown that through racing. In fact, in this year’s Mint 400, a Ducati Scrambler won its inaugural …
Small cars like the Fiesta sometimes get a bad rap when it comes to safety. But the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has found that larger vehicles like crossovers and SUVs are partially to blame for that. But the driver isn’t the only person involved in every accident. There are passengers, cyclists, and pedestrians that …
The 2021 IS’ updates, relatively minor as they are, are welcome. Lexus’ compact sports sedan has fallen behind the competition in some ways. And not just to its main rival, the BMW 3-Series. The Genesis G70 has been making a name for itself as a worthy 3-Series opponent. And arguably, the G70 is what the …
Ever since the Mercedes G63 AMG 6×6, it seems quite a few tuners and customizers have had 6-wheeled pickup trucks on their minds. Brabus offers one; you can turn a Jeep Wrangler into one. Someone even converted a Smart car into a 6-wheeled pickup. And now Rezvani, the maker behind the apocalypse-proof Tank, is getting …
Though the Supra’s 2JZ remains a first-gen IS300 exclusive, Lexus has updated its compact sports sedan over the years. The second-gen, for instance, got the V8-engined IS F. And now, for the 2021 model year, the Lexus IS enters its fourth generation. But the new model is less a full overhaul than a careful refinement. …
Claimed range is crucial for EVs, something that Tesla understands very well. It’s why, although the Porsche Taycan has the performance advantage, Tesla’s cars sell because of efficiency. At least, efficiency on paper. Updated for 2020, the Tesla Model S claims to offer a longer range than ever. But will it back that up with …
Whether it’s on an F-150 or a Bronco, a Ford with a ‘Raptor’ badge means business when it comes to off-roading. Up until now, despite RV conversions and newly-available AWD, the Ford Transit has been a bit behind Mercedes’ Sprinter in terms of going off-pavement. The new Ford Transit Trail aims to correct that. It’s …
Today, turbochargers are a standard part of the hot hatch formula. And some of the hottest, like the Golf R, rely on all-wheel drive for greater speed and traction. Both helped start the legends of cars like the Audi Ur-Quattro, Subaru WRX, and Mitsubishi Lancer Evo. But all 3 were hard-pressed to keep up with …
Before the Panigale V4, Ducati’s sportiest bikes all used the Italian brand’s 90° V-twin, aka ‘L-twin,’ engine. And, to be fair, it’s not like the company abandoned that engine completely. The rest of its lineup, from the Scrambler to the Diavel cruiser, all use L-twin engines. And you can still get a Panigale with it. …
A few complicated legal exceptions aside, replicas are often welcomed as accessible ways of celebrating automotive greats. And few machines are as recognizable as that 80s icon, the DeLorean time machine. But ignoring the pop culture panache, what’s the DeLorean DMC-12 actually like as a car? YouTube team Throttle House attempted to find out. …
Mercedes has AMG, BMW has M, and Fiat has Abarth. In the US, that name usually conjures up images of sporty Fiat 500 hatches. But the tuning firm has been in business for over 70 years at this point. And during that time, it’s improved more than just the 500’s performance. Abarth’s early history The …
High-RPM redlines and more cylinders are usually how motorcycle companies increase performance. But Yamaha is going to use something that, while common in cars, isn’t really seen in bikes: forced-induction. Not a supercharger, like on the Kawasaki Ninja H2, though. Instead, Yamaha is re-introducing turbocharging to its motorcycle lineup. The Yamaha turbocharged bike news Performance …
Just like Jeep has done, there’s another automaker introducing bicycles. Though admittedly, Jeep’s electric mountain bike is based on an existing design. The electric mountain bike released by Croatian firm Greyp, though, is entirely its own design. One that was created in part with the help of another Croatian company: electric supercar maker Rimac. How …
