Most people looking for the best cars to buy consider used options. This is the case because they’re more affordable than brand-new cars and often offer the same features and capabilities. However, odometer fraud is a big issue with some unscrupulous car showrooms. Now, a former dealership owner is facing charges for the crime.

Odometer fraud isn’t super widespread with car showrooms, but it is something to watch out for

According to WBNS CBS 10, a federal grand jury convicted the former owner of one of the car showrooms in Columbus, Ohio. Specifically, Simon Nwaru Jr., 38, is facing charges of odometer fraud related to his S. Automotive Ltd. dealership, located at 4333 E. Main Street. The report says that the man lowered the mileage on multiple vehicles between November 2020 and May 2022.

Like other car showrooms with instances of odometer fraud, the authorities are accusing the man of disconnecting, resetting, and altering the mileage of vehicles to make them more appealing. He did this to approximately eight cars, reducing the mileage by between 80,000 and 100,000 miles. This is notable not only because it’s illegal but also because he lowered the mileage by such an extreme amount.

As mentioned, other car showrooms and their owners have been found guilty of this crime. It is unclear what he will be sentenced to, but the man could face up to three years in prison. It is estimated that odometer fraud costs drivers approximately $1 billion annually, indicating it is a significant issue affecting many individuals seeking the best used cars to buy.

Fortunately, there are several ways to prevent becoming a victim of odometer fraud. First, buy from car showrooms and dealerships with long and positive reputations. Second, compare the odometer reading with the vehicle’s title. It is also essential to obtain any maintenance records and other relevant documentation. Buying a car is expensive, so conducting thorough research before purchasing is crucial.
