It’s not uncommon to see hearses on the road. After all, hearse drivers provide an essential service for honoring the deceased. Still, no one expects to see a hearse involved in a high-speed police chase in order to avoid a traffic stop. This happened recently in Indiana, and now the driver is behind bars.

No, there wasn’t a body in the hearse when they evaded the traffic stop

According to WTHR, a police officer was on patrol duty on April 11th in Lafayette, Indiana. While on duty, he spotted a hearse driving the wrong way and then blowing through a stoplight on the Sagamore Parkway. This led the officer to attempt to pull the driver over for a traffic stop, which he refused. A full-on high-speed chase was now in effect and extended into West Lafayette.

The officer continued trying to make the traffic stop on the hearse driver for a while. However, the man, who happens to be a 39-year-old, finally pulled over. He initially ignored the verbal commands from the police to exit the vehicle with his hands up. The man soon complied and was then arrested at the scene without additional protest.

Following the traffic stop, the hearse driver faces preliminary felony and misdemeanor charges for using a vehicle to resist law enforcement and lend/permit use of a driver’s license. It’s unclear if the driver has bonded out, given that this happened so close to the weekend. The report also doesn’t say who owns the hearse, as there is still an active investigation.
