Matthew Skwarczek started blogging in 2015 and focuses his writing on motorcycles and engineering science. A graduate of Northwestern University, where he earned his Master’s in Chemical Engineering, Matthew served as an applications engineer for BASF before joining MotorBiscuit in 2019.
In Matthew’s words, the visceral nature of riding requires you to be in the moment. Combined with his fascination in the analytics surrounding the building and designing of cars and bikes, both modern and classic, you’ll find his voice blends functionality and phenomena. He rides motorcycles and bicycles often, photographing them as well.
Matthew has contributed to Oppositelock and is now an alumnus. He plays Dungeons & Dragons and reads sci-fi and fantasy in his spare time, and appreciates the works of Peter Egan, Sam Smith, Brandon Sanderson, and Alex Goy.
If there’s one car that perhaps best symbolizes the rise of the EV, it’s the Tesla Model 3. The electric sedan has won a lot of consumers over for its daily usability and surprising performance. However, it’s also become a poster-child for Tesla’s continuing quality-control issues. And the Tesla Model 3 now faces a growing …
In the 90s, GM, like the other American automakers, wasn’t necessarily known for quality. True, GM did release some fondly-remembered cars, like the GMC Syclone. But this is long before the days of the C8 Corvette. And one of the cars that suffered most in the Malaise Era was the Chevy Impala. It had gone …
All 3 of the American muscle car makers—Dodge, Ford, and Chevrolet—have created high-power drag strip racers. One, the 840-hp Dodge Demon, was even street-legal, though the 1000-hp Hellephant V8 is understandably not. Although, some of the fastest cars at the drag strip aren’t gasoline-powered, but electric. Some have even transplanted EV drivetrains under classic muscle …
If you look carefully enough, the used market can be a source of some amazing high-end car bargains. For example, it’s possible to find a Porsche Cayman for less than the price of a new Honda Civic. And, of course, there’s the temptation of a used supercar, like the Audi R8. Even a brand like …
Although the latest Toyota Tacoma is noticeably different than the first-gen truck, at its core, it’s still built with old-school utility in mind. The Tacoma TRD, in particular, is a popular off-roading choice. However, as we’ve seen, it’s not invincible. Team O’Neil tested the previous-gen Tacoma around its rally school course and found it a …
Although the Mazda Miata isn’t the only affordable sports car on the market, it is one of the most popular. That popularity means there’s a ton of aftermarket support for almost any kind of Miata build you could think of. From lifting it for off-roading, to transplanting AWD underneath, to shoving a Hellcat V8 under …
In the US, Mercedes is mostly thought of as a luxury brand. Even the brand’s wackier products, like the 6-wheeled G-Wagon pickup and 500-hp R-Class minivan, offer high-end features. But the truth is Mercedes also makes more utilitarian vehicles, like the Unimog, Metris camper, and Sprinter cargo van. Though that perhaps shouldn’t be too surprising, …
There aren’t too many new cars you can get for under $20,000. True, there are some well-reviewed models, like the Toyota Yaris, Kia Soul, and Honda Fit, that start for less. But these often base-trim cars don’t exactly rank high in terms of cool factor. Luckily, the used market offers a way to get fun …
In some ways, buying a vintage Ferrari offers more freedom than buying a new one. Not to mention the potential savings. But even in the classics market, there are some Ferrari models that are often overlooked and under-appreciated. And some, although they never wore the Prancing Horse badge, were built with Maranello-derived tech. One of …
Although the lack of extensive fast-chargers limits their long-distance capability, electric motorcycles can be excellent urban commuters. In addition, the lack of clutch makes them good for beginning riders, or those without manual experience. However, the EV conversion market shows that electric cars and trucks, at least, can still use manual transmissions. And now, Kawasaki …
Today, British automaker Lotus really only makes sports cars like the Elise and planned Evija electric hyper-car. True, the Evora GT is more practical and comfortable enough to drive cross-country. But Lotus doesn’t offer a sporty sedan like the Porsche Panamera or BMW M5. However, at one point, it did. Like Porsche, Lotus was struggling …
Toyota seems to be slowly regaining its performance mojo. While the Avalon TRD isn’t terribly sporty, the Camry TRD can have some racetrack fun. Unfortunately, US enthusiasts can’t get their hands on the GR Yaris. Like the Celica GT4 before it, the GR Yaris is a true AWD homologation-special hot hatch. But because it’s so …
The current-gen Ford Mustang was, in 2019, the world’s best-selling sports car. It regularly out-sells the Camaro and even the Dodge Challenger. And the range-topping GT500 can keep pace with some supercars. But arguably the most distinctive Mustang family member is the Mach-E electric SUV. And it appears that that the Mach-E won’t just be …
The entire automotive world is feeling the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Automakers like Ford and Toyota are making face shields and GM’s building ventilators. But with no one understandably buying cars, these companies are also feeling economic pressure. And fewer people driving means more than just fewer emissions. It also means gas and oil …
For the majority of potential electric SUV owners, 200-300 miles of range should be sufficient for daily driving. Nevertheless, as with ICE SUV owners, electric SUV drivers will likely use them at least occasionally for long-distance rides and/or towing. And once outside the city, fast chargers are still relatively sparse. That’s why something like Blink’s …
Even some of the most reliable cars on the road can be subject to manufacture recalls. Although usually for mechanical reasons, today software glitches can also prompt a car to be recalled. The Toyota Highlander, for example, has been a part of both a software-related and mechanical recall. The latter case is especially problematic, as …
When an automaker wants to add another vehicle to its lineup without huge investment, badge-engineering, aka rebadging, is often the solution. That’s when two or more automakers partner to produce one shared platform that each company individually. Recent examples include the Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ, and Toyota Supra and BMW Z4. The first Mitsubishi …
Not every BMW product is necessarily excellent. True, the German automaker’s M-badged vehicles and luxury SUVs are generally well-reviewed. But several BMW models have been axed in recent years due to poor reception. The i3 and i8 hybrids may be the most notable, but BMW’s also canceled many of its ‘Gran Coupe’ models. The BMW …
