Matthew Skwarczek started blogging in 2015 and focuses his writing on motorcycles and engineering science. A graduate of Northwestern University, where he earned his Master’s in Chemical Engineering, Matthew served as an applications engineer for BASF before joining MotorBiscuit in 2019.
In Matthew’s words, the visceral nature of riding requires you to be in the moment. Combined with his fascination in the analytics surrounding the building and designing of cars and bikes, both modern and classic, you’ll find his voice blends functionality and phenomena. He rides motorcycles and bicycles often, photographing them as well.
Matthew has contributed to Oppositelock and is now an alumnus. He plays Dungeons & Dragons and reads sci-fi and fantasy in his spare time, and appreciates the works of Peter Egan, Sam Smith, Brandon Sanderson, and Alex Goy.
Just like Ford and Chevrolet compete in the car world, Indian and Harley-Davidson compete in the motorcycle world. But recently, Harley-Davidson has been going through something of an extended rough patch. Its CEO left amid what seems like boardroom drama, for one. And while Harley has some interesting bikes in development, its high-performance electric LiveWire …
Cars have an interesting relationship with water. Standing water, combined with road salt, leads to rust. And depending on where you live, rainwater can even cause paint damage. But we also need water to keep cars clean and prevent other kinds of damage. And water mixed with antifreeze helps keep modern engines cool. But it …
The late 80s and early 90s weren’t a great time for fans of American performance. True, there was the occasional bright spot, like the Impala SS, Buick GNX, and GMC Syclone. However, many muscle cars struggled to deliver on their famous names. That’s why import cars like the Acura Integra, Nissan Sentra SE-R, Mitsubishi Eclipse, …
If you're looking to buy a used BMW and are afraid of reliability, there's one model that should be on your list: the E90 3 Series. More specifically, the non-turbocharged 2006-2011 325i, 328i, and 330i.
To say the Jeep Cherokee XJ is a popular SUV is almost an understatement. It was the first SUV to switch from body-on-frame to unibody construction. But its simplicity and durable design meant it was still just as capable off-road. Police departments used them, and even 20 years after the last model rolled off the …
With the demise of the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo, the Subaru WRX is the last rally-style sedan on the market. However, while the WRX may be fast, it’s not faultless. One repeated critique, especially with older models, is the general sense of cheapness in the interior. But there is a way to get a Subaru WRX …
Although the Beetle eventually led to the Porsche 911, it’s the Golf that’s arguably more important to Volkswagen. Initially sold as the Rabbit in the US, the Golf has been used for everything from basic transportation to dual-engine Pikes Peak racer. Then there’s the Volkswagen GTI, which kick-started the hot hatch segment, creating rivals like …
Although large vehicles can be awkward in small spaces, they do have several benefits. One of those is cargo space. Whether you go for a 3-row SUV or minivan, these types of vehicles are bought in part due to their carrying capacity. However, just like 0-60 times, range, and even horsepower, a car’s cargo space …
Although the latest Bugatti may have eclipsed it in raw speed, the McLaren F1 is still an incredible supercar. Not to mention it’s still the fastest naturally-aspirated production car in the world. Even though it was never designed for racing, a mildly-modified road version won Le Mans outright in 1995. It was the first production …
Before any vehicle goes on sale, it has to go through a battery of tests. Obviously, crash tests are a major part, as are emissions and range tests. But for performance enthusiasts, arguably the most important tests are for horsepower and torque. And for an electric Mustang drag racer to make 1400 hp or the …
It’s possible to take some of the inconvenience out of driving a classic car. You can give it modern infotainment, or even swap out the powertrain for an electric one. However, automotive tech has evolved in more areas than just safety features, brakes, and engine design. Your car’s tires have also been improved over the …
For building cars, metal is usually the go-to. The Tesla Cybertruck’s body is stainless steel, for instance. It’s strong but heavy. Aluminum is the metal of choice for cutting weight, as with Ford’s F-Series trucks, Bollinger’s chassis, and some of Morgan’s upcoming cars. Bugatti, too, once used aluminum body panels. However, some of the most …
Movies have created quite a few automotive icons. The Fast and Furious films have enshrined several. But it’s not only live-action movies that have star cars. For instance, a souped-up classic Fiat 500 is the vehicle of choice for the eponymous protagonist of the Lupin the Third anime. One of the early Lupin movies, The …
As air-cooled Porsche 911s have risen in popularity—and price—so too have alternative takes on the typical hyper-restored build. One of these is the Safari 911, which sees the German sports car turn into a genuine rally replica. The trend is now so popular, well-known Porsche tuners are starting to get involved. And the Safari idea …
Regardless of how it happens, sometimes your vehicle can sit idle for an extended period of time. Usually, that’s to protect it from winter’s salt. However, if done improperly, just parking your car or bike can actually damage it. And one of the earliest casualties is your car’s or motorcycle’s battery. However, at its core, …
News recently broke about an electric SUV coming from a solar panel and charger supplier. The Triton Model H, based on its manufacturer’s claims, was an 8-seat electric SUV that could deliver up to 700 miles of range. We were understandably a bit skeptical. After all, some of the best electric SUVs on the market …
Cops have to match their wheels to their environment. In US cities, for a long time, that meant the ultra-durable Crown Vic. In more rural areas, that might mean a pickup truck or an SUV. For Dubai and its concentrated supercar population, that means other supercars. In Italy during the 1960s, police got Ferraris. You’d …
Today’s new muscle cars are definitely faster than their 60s predecessors. In fact, quite a few innocuous-looking modern cars can, too. For example, a Hyundai Veloster N can go 0-60 faster than a Hemi ‘Cuda ever could. But even ignoring how necessary emissions restrictions decreased performance, some muscle cars simply didn’t live up to their …
Families often turn to spacious 3-row SUVs for transporting people and cargo. In that regard, the 2021 Chevrolet Suburban promises to offer that in spades. Part of its 2021 update was a redesigned platform with independent rear suspension, which gives more cargo and passenger room. However, it’s possible the new Suburban may actually be too …
Police cars come in all shapes and sizes. While the quintessential US cop car is the Ford Crown Victoria, police departments have used a variety of vehicles to fulfill their duties. Pickup trucks, Jeep Cherokees, and BMW M5s have all been brought in to protect and serve. The Dubai police’s fleet, though, includes high-end supercars …
