Why Are Classic Fiat 500s Worth More Than Some Modern Ones?

As the owners of air-cooled 911s can attest, classic cars sometimes loom large against their modern descendants. Sometimes the looming is more about a car’s ethos, as seen with the E30 BMW M3. Other times, though, the vintage model can eclipse its newer counterpart in market value. Such is the case with the Fiat 500—specifically, …

How Do You Adjust a Carburetor?

If you’ve been eyeing a classic car or motorcycle, know that their maintenance schedules are typically shorter than their modern counterparts. Oil changes are more frequent, for example. Plus, even the best-kept vintage vehicles are, well, vintage—and time decays all eventually. And one of the biggest changes is learning to live with and adjust a …

Doug Demuro Drives a Mercedes Unimog U500 You Can Buy

The G-Wagon is already one of Mercedes-Benz’s most capable off-roaders. But when it comes to overlanding, even the G-Wagon has to bow to the Mercedes Unimog. Unfortunately, it’s rare that one pops up for sale in the US. However, the 2004 U500 Doug Demuro recently featured in one of his videos isn’t just in the …

Should You Change Your Motorcycle Mirrors?

New jackets and gloves aren’t the only accessories available for motorcyclists. Just like with cars, there are a variety of ways for you to modify your bike, from handlebars to heated grips. And a common modification is swapping out the standard motorcycle mirrors for some aftermarket ones. But is it a modification worth pursuing? Why …

Lamborghini’s Super SUV Races a Shelby F-150 Super Snake

With a Shelby Super Snake touch, the Ford F-150 makes for one very rapid pickup truck. But it’s not the only high-speed heavyweight on the market. The Lamborghini Urus is one of the fastest SUVs on sale today. So, which is faster, the snake or the bull? That’s what YouTube team Throttle House tried to …

Does the 2020 Dodge Charger Daytona Live up To Its Classic Namesake?

The Hellcat Redeye model isn’t the only special Dodge Charger available right now. In honor of the original Charger Daytona’s 50th anniversary, Dodge launched a limited-edition modern homage. But just because the name’s the same—or at least similar—doesn’t mean the new model drives like the classic one. So, how does the 2020 Dodge Charger Daytona …

The Swede Mercedes Unimog Alternative: The Volvo Laplander

At least in the US, luxury cars tend to be what people think of when the name ‘Mercedes-Benz’ pops up. But the German automaker has an extensive history of more utilitarian offerings, too. It’s made minibuses like the Omnibus, for example. Plus, the G-Wagon was originally a rugged off-roader fit for civilians and military personnel. …

Can a 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Keep up With a 1400-Hp Hoonicorn?

The Shelby GT500 Mustang is undoubtedly one fast Ford. And it more than lives up to its classic forebearer’s legacy. But it’s not the only quick Mustang. Racer and drifter Ken Block has crafted his own super ‘Stang: the Hoonicorn V2. So, does the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 have what it takes to keep up? …

The 2021 Ducati Multistrada V4 Offers a Real Adventure

Adventure bikes are common choices for those interested in do-it-all motorcycles. They work as good urban commuters, excellent tourers, and, as befits their name, can tackle off-road terrain. Hence why Ducati calls its adventure bike ‘Multistrada,’ for ‘many roads.’ And for 2021, it’s been updated into the Ducati Multistrada V4, complete with some significant industry-first …

Volkswagen’s Fix for Limited EV Chargers: Send in the Droids

Though battery technology is inching towards affordability, major EV adoption still has hurdles to overcome. And as Consumer Reports’ recent survey showcases, one of the biggest is public EV charger availability. Even though fast-charging stations cut recharge time, it only works if everyday consumers can reasonably access them. And Volkswagen recently announced what it claims …
Jay Leno's red 1955 Bristol 403

Jay Leno’s Bristol 403 Is “the Most British of British Cars”

In-period exclusivity often turns to modern obscurity when it comes to classic luxury cars. While the Citroen DS is fairly well-known, for example, not many remember Facel Vega’s well-appointed wheels. It’s a similar story for premium British marques. Jaguar, Aston Martin, Bentley, and Rolls-Royce are all prominent names. But the lesser-known subject of Jay Leno’s …

The ‘Kenmeri’ Is the Oft-Forgotten Nissan Skyline GT-R

Even though the later R33 model offers several improvements, the Nissan R32 Skyline GT-R has firmly established itself as a JDM icon. However, the R32 isn’t the first car to bear the ‘Skyline GT-R’ name. That would be the ‘Hakosuka’ model of the early 70s. But in-between that car and the R32 came another Skyline, …

Watch the Toyota GR Yaris Take on Its Rally Predecessor

Thanks to a rally racing touch, the Toyota GR Yaris is shaping up to a truly hype-worthy hot hatch. But it’s not the Japanese automaker’s only all-wheel-drive hatchback rally entry. Before the GR Yaris, Toyota had the Celica GT-Four. But how does the new kid on the block compare to the old guard? The YouTube …
A black 1985 E28 BMW M5 on a snowy mountain

The Original E28 BMW M5 Was a Supercar-Slaying Sedan

Given that the 707-hp Dodge Charger Hellcat is now the 2nd most-powerful model in its lineup, it’s easy to forget that sedans have rarely been performance cars. That especially applies to classic luxury sedans, which were typically more about refinement than outright speed. But back in the ‘80s, one car helped change that perception: the …

This American Sports Car Earned the ‘Greatest Ever’ Title, Not the Legendary McLaren F1

Even though Gordan Murray already designed its spiritual successor, the McLaren F1 still looms large in the automotive consciousness. From its Toyota-Sera-inspired doors to its gold-lined engine bay, it’s a supercar that still feels, well, super. But according to Road & Track, it’s not the best sports car. Instead, that title belongs to the Shelby …
A cutaway ZF dual-mass engine flywheel

Is a Lightweight Engine Flywheel a Worthwhile Upgrade?

Adding more power via something like a turbocharger is a common-enough idea. But some modifications, rather than increasing raw performance, are about tweaking a car’s character in subtler ways. You can install a short shifter, for example, or swap your transmission’s gear ratios. Or you can give your car a lighter engine flywheel, or a …

All I Want for Christmas Is This 1971 Alfa Romeo GT 1300 Junior

Although Alfa Romeo’s current lineup is shrinking, the Italian brand’s classic models are still worth second or third looks. The 155 Q4 and the 75, for instance, could square off with contemporary M3s. And the Montreal has Lamborghini Miura looks at a significant discount. But this week’s special-edition Bring a Trailer bargain car is a …

Is Giving Your Car Carbon-Ceramic Brakes Worth It?

Your brake pads, like your rotors, aren’t just maintenance items. As with your tires, wheels, intake, and exhaust, you can swap them out for upgraded versions. And when it comes to high-performance cars, carbon-ceramic brakes are a common feature. But are these ceramic brakes a modification worth pursuing? What’s different about carbon-ceramic brakes? Although a …

Why Are Automakers Replacing Buttons With Touchscreens?

Even some of the worst infotainment systems on the market have touchscreen displays. It’s rare, in fact, to find cars nowadays that lack them. Indeed, Tesla’s EVs are famous for having little-to-no physical controls. Instead, the majority of the vehicle’s functions, even its windshield wiper controls, are found on the touchscreen. However, not every car …
