Matthew Skwarczek started blogging in 2015 and focuses his writing on motorcycles and engineering science. A graduate of Northwestern University, where he earned his Master’s in Chemical Engineering, Matthew served as an applications engineer for BASF before joining MotorBiscuit in 2019.
In Matthew’s words, the visceral nature of riding requires you to be in the moment. Combined with his fascination in the analytics surrounding the building and designing of cars and bikes, both modern and classic, you’ll find his voice blends functionality and phenomena. He rides motorcycles and bicycles often, photographing them as well.
Matthew has contributed to Oppositelock and is now an alumnus. He plays Dungeons & Dragons and reads sci-fi and fantasy in his spare time, and appreciates the works of Peter Egan, Sam Smith, Brandon Sanderson, and Alex Goy.
Land Rover’s Range Rover may be one of the reasons so many people associate SUVs with luxury and status. It combined the go-anywhere capability of the original Land Rover with on-road refinement and a quality interior. Decades later, it’s still a very refined and competent SUV on pavement and over muddy grass. Although considering it’s …
Before the Tesla Cybertruck, there was another Tesla electric pickup truck: the Truckla. YouTuber and creator Simone Giertz wanted an electric pickup, but the Cybertruck wasn’t out yet. So, she took a Model 3 and turned it into a truck. But now the uniquely-designed Cybertruck has officially been unveiled, although production won’t start until late …
Police vehicles have to be at least as fast and tough as the vehicles being pursued. Places like Italy and Dubai use supercars to catch up to the fast and furious. US cops may not have Lamborghinis, but they have traded up from Crown Vics. While Dodge Chargers and Ford Explorers are commonly sighted, many …
With the development of electric crate motors, and classic trucks being converted to electric drive, it’s now easier than ever to turn an iconic oldie into an EV. But it isn’t only classic cars and pickups that can now run on electrons. SUVs, in fossil-fuel form, are often criticized (not entirely undeservedly) for their emissions …
Classic pickup trucks’ simplicity is both their biggest selling point and biggest weakness. And we’re not talking only about thinner A-pillars and lack of airbags. Classic trucks have fewer, if any, complicated electronics and fuel injection systems. But while that makes them simpler to fix, it also means they emit significantly more emissions and use …
Pickup trucks are built to tow, and the electric Tesla Cybertruck pickup is no different. In tri-motor AWD form, Tesla claims the Cybertruck will be able to tow up to 14,000 pounds. That’s actually more than the Ford F-150; its max is 13,200 lbs. But numbers on a screen aren’t the same as actually hauling …
Love it or hate it, the Tesla Cybertruck electric pickup draws eyes. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has claimed the truck’s design was influenced by Blade Runner. Although with those angular, shiny stainless steel panels, some commenters have Back to the Future in mind instead. But choosing steel over aluminum is more than a little interesting. …
Tesla’s electric pickup truck, the Cybertruck, certainly hasn’t had a quiet introduction. Its design has invited several interesting comparisons and critiques, as have several of its features. Especially the Cybertruck’s supposedly ‘bulletproof’ windows, which broke twice during on-stage demonstrations with thrown steel balls. Elon Musk may have quipped it away, but he may have feared …
Pickup truck fans sometimes seem to have a love-hate relationship with modern safety features. On the one hand, classic trucks are lighter and easier to see out of because of thin A-pillars and no airbags. But that also makes them more dangerous to drive around in. And with pickups being used more and more as …
Although classic and antique SUVs are becoming popular investments, it’s due in part to them being extremely capable machines. While not as safe as newer models, they were designed to work hard. That includes shrugging off the worst that winter can throw at them. So, while their age requires some concessions, there’s no reason to …
Driving a truck or SUV in the winter isn’t something to take lightly. Yes, it can be a lot of fun. But, even when snow and ice don’t cover the road, your vehicle is going to behave differently. Still, winter driving shouldn’t be something to be scared of. Not as long as you keep a …
Sometimes, 700 horsepower just isn’t enough—but 6 wheels is too much. When Hennessey Performance Engineering unveiled the Goliath 6×6, it was a chance for Chevrolet fans to experience what HPE had already done with the VelociRaptor 6×6. Unfortunately, Hennessey will only make 24. Luckily, Hennessey recently revealed four-wheeled Goliaths that can be built on both …
Pickup trucks may be closely tied to the image of ‘America’, but not every ‘American’ truck is made here. And, to be fair, the nature of automotive manufacturing means truck-building a truly global task. Japanese companies like Honda and Toyota make some vehicles here in the US, for instance. It’s all a matter of economics …
Despite the inherent awesomeness of the Hennessey Goliath 6×6, the Texas tuner was never going to make more than 24. And with a $375,000 price tag, it seemed doomed to exclusivity. But Hennessey Performance Engineering announcing a possible power upgrade for the Goliath made us curious. With production so limited, why the boost? Turns out, …
With the Tesla Cybertruck’s reveal, another electric pickup truck as officially stepped into the ring. And while the looks are an acquired taste for some, the numbers are perhaps the more important feature. Not only does Tesla’s electric truck have to overcome range anxiety, it has to prove it can tow and haul just as …
The Chevrolet Silverado’s going through a bit of a rollercoaster-ride recently. On the one hand, there’s a new limited-edition trim out, and it beat the industry average for resale value. However, recent reviews of both the 2020 model and the latest GMC Sierra both found areas for improvement. And now, there’s news of Silverado seat …
We finally know what the real, production-spec Tesla electric pickup looks like. After many renders and much speculation, last night Elon Musk showed the Tesla Cybertruck on-stage to the whole world. And the reactions were…interesting. Not because of the specs, but the looks. The Cybertruck’s design has been polarizing, to say the least. Musk promised …
You know in Chernobyl when the radiation dosimeters go off-the-scale because they can’t accurately measure what’s flying around the room? That’s kind of what’s happening with trucks and SUVs when it comes to crash tests right now. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has come forward and admitted it needs a new safety test. The …
Value is important when buying a new pickup truck, but it’s also important when selling a used one. Whether you’re trading in at a dealer or selling on Craigslist, you want to get your money’s worth. Sometimes, used trucks can hold their value astonishingly well—even selling for more than new ones. But depreciation usually hits …
