Matthew Skwarczek started blogging in 2015 and focuses his writing on motorcycles and engineering science. A graduate of Northwestern University, where he earned his Master’s in Chemical Engineering, Matthew served as an applications engineer for BASF before joining MotorBiscuit in 2019.
In Matthew’s words, the visceral nature of riding requires you to be in the moment. Combined with his fascination in the analytics surrounding the building and designing of cars and bikes, both modern and classic, you’ll find his voice blends functionality and phenomena. He rides motorcycles and bicycles often, photographing them as well.
Matthew has contributed to Oppositelock and is now an alumnus. He plays Dungeons & Dragons and reads sci-fi and fantasy in his spare time, and appreciates the works of Peter Egan, Sam Smith, Brandon Sanderson, and Alex Goy.
The Chevrolet Silverado is a fairly-good work truck–albeit with some interesting recalls–and it’s also very configurable. Engine choices range from a turbocharged four-cylinder to a V8, there are a number of off-road special editions, and buyers can pick from a crew, double, or single cab. However, the only Silverado that can come as a single …
The Tesla Cybertruck electric pickup isn’t out yet, but it’s already generated a lot of media coverage and excitement. Mostly centered around its design, which, despite the windows and stainless steel shock factors, has had some careful engineering put into it. But arguably the most important info is the Cybertruck’s release date. Initially, all three …
With how long some owners keep their SUVs on the road, reliability is no doubt a key shopping consideration. Enough quality issues and even brand loyalists will jump ship. And even with today’s six-figure-plus luxury brands, problems still occur. But despite these headaches, some owners keep coming back for more. This makes the list of …
Ford F-150 builds and modifications run across an entire spectrum. Some are made for off-roading, with Ford’s own F-150 Raptor and Hennessey’s VelociRaptor 6×6 filling the roles of Baja racers. Others, like the Harley-Davidson edition, are built more for style. Roush Performance has provided parts and tuning for both ends. The tuner can supercharge the …
Although the Ford Bronco R didn’t win the Baja 1000, it still gave a heck of a performance. Competing with the likes of Honda’s Unlimited Ridgeline, the Bronco R was also an early look at the production SUV. Obviously, as a Trophy Truck, the Bronco R doesn’t share a lot with the street Bronco. And …
The 90s brought legends from Japan into the US, such as the iconic Acura Integra Type R and NSX. But Acura in the 90s was also making its first foray into selling SUVs. Although the company’s current success owes much to SUVs like the RDX—reliable and more American-made than the F-150—it wasn’t always this way. …
Electric pickups aren’t competing with ICE pickups solely on range, but on towing, too. Tesla appeared to demonstrate that there’s nothing to worry about when the Cybertruck towed that F-150 uphill. There’s also an electric F-150 out with a towing capacity of 18,000 lbs. However, although Tesla claims the tri-motor Cybertruck will tow up to …
Trucks can race, too. Some, like Ken Block, modify trucks for drifting or hill-climbing. Others, like the man behind the V8 Mini pickup, for drag-racing. But one of the premier truck-racing scenes is Baja. There, Trophy Trucks like the Bronco R and SCG Baja Boot battle rocks, sand, heat, and time to finish. And there’s …
The Toyota Tundra is known for many things: reliability, American production, and value retention. However, performance doesn’t really make the list. Although the next-gen truck promises hybrid power and a twin-turbo V6, the current 5.7-liter V8 isn’t terribly fuel-efficient or powerful. The Tundra didn’t even make our list of full-size trucks with high payloads. There …
The Jeep Wrangler isn’t just an off-roading American icon, it’s an amazingly popular SUV. Buyers regularly trade in muscle cars for it, and the new diesel and upcoming plug-in hybrid versions will surely add to its popularity. But the Wrangler’s star status also makes its shortcomings that much more apparent. The truth is, the Jeep …
Today’s Tucson joins the Palisade in showing what makes Hyundai a well-regarded automaker. The updated-for-2019 Tucson isn’t just popular with female car-buyers, its platform may form the basis of the upcoming Santa Cruz pickup. It’s also an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ and has been since its 2016 redesign. However, the 2016 Tucson is also the …
Considering how big even mid-size pickup trucks are getting, there’s been a rise in demand for smaller trucks. Car-based pickups, like the Chevrolet El Camino, are experiencing a revival. One YouTuber turned her Tesla Model 3 into a pickup. Hyundai is gearing up for the Santa Cruz compact truck. There’s even a company that’ll turn …
Whether you’re considering buying a classic truck or prepping your SUV for winter, rust is always a concern. Although it’s commonly thought of as an ‘old vehicle’ problem, rust issues still plague modern trucks and SUVs. Even well-reviewed ones like the Ram 1500 and Toyota Tacoma. But with the correct care and prep-work, rust isn’t …
Not every special-edition truck is valuable. Many offer little beyond cosmetic upgrades. For example, you can option a normal F-150 to match up with the Harley-Davidson edition and save almost $20,000. But monetary value isn’t always what makes special editions appealing. Some, like the F-150 Tonka edition, have an emotional appeal. And despite its appearance, …
While relatively affordable, the Chevrolet Blazer hasn’t had the smoothest debut. In addition to the UAW issues, the base engine has been criticized for its lack of power. Opting for the turbocharged four-cylinder or the V6 does improve things. But some owners—actually, quite a few—still want more than 308 hp. Luckily, the Blazer’s V6 is …
The upcoming Hyundai Santa Cruz comes at the front of a mid-size and compact pickup truck resurgence. But information on the ‘compact utility vehicle’, as Hyundai calls it, has been fairly scarce. We know it’s coming in 2021, and that it’ll be produced at Hyundai’s Montgomery, Alabama factory. But beyond conflicting platform rumors, that’s about …
It’s practically a cliché: “no replacement for displacement.” If you want your truck or SUV to tow the most, carry the most, you need the biggest engine possible. And as a helpful by-product, you get more speed. Except, not always. There’s more than one way to generate big numbers than simply increasing the size of …
Ford’s all-electric F-150 is coming…eventually. Although the automaker is working with Rivian, who is making its own electric pickup, the electric F-Series might not arrive until 2021. Maybe in 2020, if development goes smoothly. By then, the Rivian R1T and Bollinger B2 will have debuted, too, leaving Ford with a fight on its hands. But …
In the tier list of off-road SUVs, the Mercedes G-Class stands at the top. With three locking differentials, a ladder frame and all-wheel drive, the original didn’t need a big engine to conquer trails. And as it evolved into the luxury tank of today, its appeal only grew. But Mercedes-Benz never lost sight of the …
