In a story that will soon become more common as more snow falls on the United States, two massive multi-car crashes in Colorado occurred this week. The two sets of pileups occurred less than 15 minutes apart on Interstate 70 and involved 50 vehicles in total.

Amazingly, just like the pileup involving 98 cars in Indiana on the same highway, only in Indiana, no one reported being seriously injured. However, as the Denver Post noted, two pileups damaged dozens of vehicles.

Colorado State Patrol (CSP) officers were the first to respond, arriving at the initial pileup near mile marker 130 at 11:28 a.m. Upon arrival, the officers counted 20 vehicles among the wreckage.

Not even 15 minutes later, at 11:42 a.m., Colorado State Patrol reported another pileup on the same stretch of highway. This time, 30 vehicles were involved in crashes in the snow just down the road near milepost 119.

The massive pileups caused road closures in both directions at both locations. CSP later reopened all lanes, but the visibility in the area at the time remained only about 500 feet.

Colorado State Patrol issues numerous warnings and tips for driving in wintry weather

Since the two pileups on Interstate 70, CSP has been posting numerous winter driving messages on social media. Among the messages are “Reduce your speeds!” and “Roads are icy, even if they look clear.”

“No one expects to get stranded on the side of a road, but Colorado’s weather and road conditions can ruin your smooth commute. Pack a winter emergency kit with essential items, including a shovel, blankets, jumper cables, and non-perishable food,” read another message.

“We know – you’ve lived here your whole life, your tires are ‘basically brand new’ and you ‘drive better in the snow,’ read another warning. “But the upcoming storm is a good reminder that even seasoned Coloradoans need to slow down, drive with patience, and leave early when the weather rolls in.”

“If the weather starts to change, adjust your driving accordingly,” the Colorado State Patrol added in another post. “Slow down and leave extra space between vehicles. Remember, bridges and overpasses are the first to freeze.”

On Wednesday, it was apparent that not everyone was heeding Colorado State Patrol’s warnings about driving in wintry weather.
