The top 10 cars reported stolen in America are a weird mix of models and types
Thieves steal a car, truck, SUV, or minivan every 33 seconds or so. That’s right; in the time it took you to warm up that lukewarm cup of coffee a little bit, someone else loses their vehicle to car theft. But some makes and models fall victim to thieves more often than others, and it’s a bit of an odd group of vehicle types.
The usual suspects make up the cars most frequently reported stolen, along with trucks, sensible sedans, and 2 SUVs
Americans buy more pickup trucks and SUVs than they do cars. It’s odd, then, that only one full-size pickup truck and two SUVs make the list of the cars that owners most frequently report as stolen.
1. Hyundai Sonata
The Hyundai Sonata takes the top spot, with a caveat. In short, it depends on the metric. Thieves steal about 157 Sonatas for every 10,000 units sold, per Trusted Choice. That puts the Sonata just ahead of its smaller sibling, the Elantra.
2. Hyundai Elantra
The Hyundai Elantra takes the No. 2 spot with 154 thefts per 10,000 cars sold. That said, the Elantra was the most stolen car in 21 of 50 US states, leaving every other model in the dust. Like the Sonata, the Elantra is the victim of the “Kia Challenge” and similar social media theft challenges.
Hyundai and Kia vehicles manufactured without standard passive immobilizers proved easy for thieves to steal. Add in social media popularity, and the brands’ vehicles became a huge target for theft.
3. Kia Soul
It’s true. The boxy little car once promoted by a gaggle of dancing hamsters has a dark side. Thieves steal as many as 142 of the little Kia hatchbacks for every 10,000 the brand sells. It definitely gives the hamsters less reason to dance.
4. Kia Sportage
The Kia Sportage is the first SUV to make the list. Of course, the Sportage is one of the brand’s smallest SUVs. Not quite a Telluride. Still, thieves steal about 132 Sportage SUVs for every 10,000 models sold, 10 off pace of the boxy little Soul hatchback.
5. Kia Forte
Rounding out the top five models in the list of the cars most frequently reported as stolen, the Kia Forte comes in just behind the Sportage. Yet another Hyundai/Kia offering targeted by the social media theft trends, Forte owners report around 124 thefts for every 10,000 units sold. Fortunately, the numbers drop off steeply after the Forte.
6. Chevrolet Silverado
The Chevrolet Silverado is the most-stolen vehicle in nine US states, including California and Texas. And at 48 thefts for every 10,000 pickup trucks sold by the Bow Tie, the Silverado takes the No. 6 spot among the most common targets of theft.
Still, it’s a far cry from the 150+ thefts of the Hyundai sedans in the first two spots.
7. Jeep Grand Cherokee
The Jeep Grand Cherokee is the only larger SUV on the list. It’s plentiful, inconspicuous, and available with larger, more powerful HEMI V8 engines in older models. As a result, thieves steal an average of 39 Grand Cherokees for every 10,000 units Jeep sells in the United States.
8. Dodge Charger
The Dodge Charger bowed out of production after the 2023 model year, only to return as an EV. But that doesn’t stop thieves from targeting the four-door muscle cars with some frequency. On average, thieves stole 38 Dodge Chargers for every 10,000 that Stellantis sold while it was in production.
9. Honda Accord
The last two spots belong to Honda’s two most popular sensible sedans. In the No. 9 spot, the Honda Accord barely beats its smaller sibling, the Civic. Thieves steal an average of 36 Accords for every 10,000 units. Surprisingly, the Accord’s closest rival, the Toyota Camry, doesn’t make the list.
10. Honda Civic
The Honda Civic, one of America’s perennial favorites among sensible sedans, rounds out the top 10 vehicles most frequently reported stolen by their owners. On average, thieves steal 35 of the smaller Honda sedans per 10,000 cars, just one behind its larger sibling.
