Tesla lays off over 80 people at Giga Texas
82 contracted employees won’t be returning to work at Tesla’s Giga Texas plant. The EV automaker terminated the employee’s contracts in what could be yet another string of layoffs.
Tesla terminated a contract with workers at Gigafactory Texas, effectively laying off 82 people
Tesla recently ended its contract with Ohio-based MPW Industrial Services Inc. for work at its Gigafactory Texas location in Austin. MPW Services bills itself as “North America’s leading provider of automated industrial cleaning services.
The move terminates 82 contracted, non-union employees across four positions, per Electrek. According to the filing, 61 technicians, seven supervisors, seven team leads, and seven managers are out of work.
The factory and global headquarters sprawl over 10 million square feet and are currently home to the best-selling Tesla Model Y and the Cybertruck.
This isn’t the first time Tesla has resorted to layoffs
But it’s far from the first time Tesla cut its workforce at the Texas plant. Since April of last year, Tesla has laid off over 2,000 employees from the facility, dropping its employee pool from nearly 23,000 at the end of 2023 and 28,000 earlier this year.
Giga Texas has already felt the squeeze of 2025 before these latest terminations, too. The electric automaker halted production at Giga Texas in July, again giving employees the option to take PTO or remain at the plant for “training and cleaning.” However, this comparably small termination could be the beginning of another wave of layoffs.
