The Ford Escape is a compact SUV model produced and sold by the Ford Motor Company. As a collaborative project with the Mazda Motor Corporation, it was sold as the Mazda Tribute from 2000 to 2011. For Ford, the sport utility vehicle was known as the Maverick in China, the Kuga in Europe, and the Escape in North America. Additionally, it was rebadged as the Mariner through Ford’s now retired Mercury division.
First released in 2000, the 2001 Ford Escape featured a unibody design that differed from body-on-frame pickup truck-based designs of the era. Another way the Escape stood out from the back was its early exploration of hybrid SUVs. The first Ford Escape Hybrid model, debuting in 2004, was the first hybrid SUV produced for sale (rather than just being a concept).
Early into its fourth generation, the Ford Escape continues to succeed as a proudly American-built SUV. Its competition includes the Chevy Equinox, the Hyundai Tucson, the Kia Sportage, the Mazda CX-5, and the Nissan Rogue.
