Originally, the base Porsche 911 wasn't called the Carrera. That was originally a higher-end trim named in honor of Porsche's success at the Carrera Panamericana. But after the 911 was almost killed off, the name reappeared as part of a rejuvenation campaign. And the 911 Carrera has been the base trim ever since.
