Texas woman’s SUV burns 20 days after being sold on Facebook Marketplace

Jayanna Williams is struggling with the aftermath of losing her SUV and personal belongings as her SUV erupted into flames. The incident occurred in Houston, Texas, 20 days after the purchase was finalized.

She was using the 2006 Nissan Murano as her daily driver as she attended medical school. On her way home, another driver frantically waved her down, saying her car was on fire. Williams escaped just in time.

Her car quickly turned into a pile of melted metal. She lost her laptop, ID, Social Security card, birth certificate, and bank cards.

Williams paid $1,500 for the Nissan SUV and then spent another $1,500 on maintenance, inspections, and registration. The only issue a mechanic found was related to a failing catalytic converter sensor.

The seller blocked her Facebook and may have knowingly sold her the SUV despite having severe problems. ButWilliams has purchased a vehicle from Facebook Marketplace in the past without any issues.

According to Click 2 Houston, her purchase doesn’t qualify for protections offered by Lemon Law. It was a purchase in a private sale.

The Lemon Law in Texas only covers used vehicles if they’re still under the original manufacturer’s warranty or if a defect was reported to the dealer while under warranty and continues to exist.
