Over 43,000 General Motors SUVs are under recall for transmission problems

General Motors is issuing a recall for over 43,000 SUVs due to a transmission problem that could increase the risk of accidents and injuries.

This recall includes the following 2022 model year SUVs that are equipped with gasoline engines and the 10-speed automatic transmission:

  • 17,178 Chevrolet Tahoe models
  • 7,616 Chevrolet Suburban models
  • 7,820 GMC Yukon models
  • 5,270 YUkon XL models
  • 3,609 Cadillac Escalade models
  • 2,239 Cadillac Escalade ESV models

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a problem with the spark ignition fuel system could cause the rear wheels to lock up. The lock-up can be brief, or the wheels can remain locked.

The transmission valve control could be susceptible to excess wear with time. This may cause a gradual loss in pressure. Drivers may notice harsh shifting before this problem occurs.

To remedy the problem, dealership technicians will install new transmission control module software to monitor valve performance and detect excessive wear.

If they detect the issue, the transmission will be limited to fifth gear to prevent wheel lock-up. A service engine light and reduced propulsion message will appear on the instrument panel.

Owners at risk will be notified via mail beginning on March 30. You can also see if your vehicle is at risk with the NHTSA lookup tool
