I’m not saying that the Subaru Crosstrek is a bad SUV. It’s a great option to consider. However, a new engine is on the way that will change the game. You might want to wait for the new Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid to drop.

The Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid is making a comeback

Currently, the 2025 Subaru Crosstrek is available with a standard 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 152 hp and 145 lb-ft of torque. It’s a little underwhelming, but it gets the job done.

You can upgrade to the 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine for 182 hp and 178 lb-ft of torque. It can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 7.9 seconds, which is average for the class.

Also, the Crosstrek gets an EPA-estimated 27 mpg in the city and up to 34 mpg on the highway. That’s pretty good.

However, I think that when the Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid drops, it will be faster and more fuel efficient. It’s going after the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid.

With the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, you get a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that’s paired with three electric motors to generate 226 hp and 252 lb-ft of torque.

It can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 7.3 seconds. It gets an EPA-estimated 41 mpg in the city and up to 38 mpg on the highway.

Plus, Subaru shared that the system will provide a 20% improvement in fuel consumption compared to the previous Crosstrek Hybrid.

It could have a range of up to 621 miles between fill-ups. The RAV4 Hybrid can travel about 594 miles on a single tank of gas.

The 2022 Crosstrek Hybrid is a PHEV model. It paired a 2.0-liter flat-four engine with an electric motor and a battery pack to generate 148 hp. The PHEV has an EPA-estimated range of 17 miles, 90 MPGe, and 35 mpg with gas only.

It was discontinued due to a lack of sales. The price was steep at $36,700. Hopefully, the 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid will be more affordable.
