Cars are a depreciating asset. Unless your vehicle is a spectacularly collectible example of a sought-after and in-demand vehicle, your vehicle will lose value in the first five years of ownership. Of course, not every vehicle loses its resale value at the same rate. For discerning car buyers, a recent depreciation study laid out the vehicles with the worst resale value.

An iSeeCars study shows that two of the top 5 vehicles with the worst depreciation are EVs, while all of them are luxury models

According to a recent iSeeCars study, the vehicles with the worst depreciation on the market may lose around 70% of their original value in five years. Of the top five popular models with the worst resale value on the market, all five are luxury vehicles. Two of the top losers are EVs, one Jaguar and one Tesla. The other three spots belong to gas-powered luxury sedans and a solitary SUV.

The Jaguar I-PACE, the brand’s now-discontinued electric SUV, takes the top spot with a commanding lead. Specifically, I-PACE owners may notice that the resale value of their luxury EV is a staggering 27.8% of its original value after five years. Not great for a vehicle that started at $73,375 in 2024.

Following the I-PACE and its abysmal resale value, the BMW 7 Series takes the No. 2 spot. On average, a 7 Series may shed as much as 67.1% of its original value in depreciation over the first five years of ownership. In 2025, the full-size BMW luxury sedan started at $98,475, suggesting the 7 Series could lose around $66,000 of its original value in five years.

The second EV on the shortlist, the Tesla Model S, comes in just behind the BMW 7 Series. According to the study, Tesla’s original best-seller may lose around 65.2% of its original value in half a decade. Conversely, a peak-depreciation Tesla Model S could be a prudent way to buy a luxury electric sedan. That is, if you can manage the stigma surrounding the brand

Finally, the INFINITI QX80 and Maserati Ghibli take the No. 4 and No. 5 spots. Both luxury gas-powered vehicles hover at right around the 65% depreciation mark. Still, the Ghibli’s hold on the fifth rank among the vehicles with the worst resale value isn’t commanding; the BMW 5 Series tied the Ghibli’s average five-year depreciation.
