Stellantis is cutting 1,100 jobs at its Jeep Gladiator plant as sales continue to slide
Many of the best cars to buy fall under the Stellantis umbrella. However, the company has been struggling as of late and trying to find ways to cut costs. Naturally, this means there have been numerous layoffs and the company recently halted production on some of its vehicles. Now, Stellantis has more layoffs planned thanks to the disastrous sales of the Jeep Gladiator.
Low sales of Stellantis cars are causing more layoffs
Many Stellantis cars have seen declines in sales lately. This includes the Jeep Gladiator, which started decently strong in popularity. Now, according to The Detroit News, Stellantis has decided to cut a shift at the Toledo plant. They build the Jeep pickup as well as the iconic Wrangler SUV at this plant.
Naturally, stopping one shift at the plant that makes two of the most talked-about Stellantis cars means layoffs. Reports say that 1,139 indefinite layoffs will occur, and they could start as early as January 5th. The company has already issued the required Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification to local and state authorities.
It’s important to note that this news surrounding Stellantis cars and layoffs comes as no surprise. The company has scaled down its workforce quite a bit this year already. Additionally, regarding the Jeep Gladiator, the company has paused production multiple times as several units are left on dealer lots around the country.
Of course, Stellantis has released a statement on the matter. It reads, “As Stellantis navigates a transitional year, the focus is on realigning its U.S. operations to ensure a strong start to 2025, which includes taking the difficult but necessary action to reduce high inventory levels by managing production to meet sales.”
Until the layoffs, Stellantis plans to rotate shifts at the plant due to lower demand for its cars. The day shift employees will work some days while the afternoon shift will work others. Notably, sales for the Jeep Gladiator are down by 21 percent compared to last year. So far, it has only sold 32,673 units in 2024.
