Retired Secret Service agent shows drivers how to stand next to your car at a gas station
Scott Bryson served in U.S. law enforcement for more than 29 years. As a former Secret Service agent, he hosts a podcast wherein he interviews folks in and around the industry about their experiences. Let’s just say he’s seen “some stuff” over the years. Now, he often shares his insights with his followers on social media. Bryson just posted a short on how to stay safe in public. Since being out and about often involves driving, there’s a specific tip in here about how to properly stand next to your car at a gas station that’s totally worth sharing.

While the gas pump is doing its thing, Bryson says, just lean up against your car and stay off your phone. It’s that simple.
Now, you can see all around you without worrying that your back is exposed. The car is protecting you from behind. By keeping your eyes off a screen at a gas station, you’ll avoid being caught off guard.
You can even make defensive movements from this position. “If somebody approaches you and they’re up to no good, spray them with the gas,” he suggests. “They’ll probably run off.”
Gas stations aren’t all that safe…especially for women, and especially at night.
Several sources cite the U.S. Bureau of Justice’s estimate that around 63,000 violent crimes happen at gas stations in the United States each year. The also FBI reported that 4.5% of all reported violent crimes in 2022 happened at gas stations and convenience stores.
