A Kentucky man stopped in his tracks when he saw a particularly peculiar car in the road. That’s because he happened to witness a “couch” car—a vehicle built on a platform with a full couch and dresser attached to it.

TikTok user Natalia Verenich (@nataliaverenich) posted a clip of the encounter where an unknown man approached a couple who owned the car and asked them some questions. In the video, the man seems amazed at the ingenuity of the “couch car.”

Verenich later described the encounter in her caption, saying, “honestly one of the best things I’ve seen ever.”

The Famous Couch Car In Kentucky

Many commenters instantly recognized that car. Apparently, the vehicle is a very famous car in the Lexington, Kentucky area.

Tim Francis and Cheryl Irwin, two Lexington locals, built the vehicle using an old couch found behind a dumpster. Francis studied electronic components, purchasing a a three-wheel gold chassis that he used as the base of the vehicle. Then, he added multiple different parts that made it street legal.

According to the Lexington Herald Leader, “The vehicle comes complete with headlights, two boat horns, two desk lamps and a fern mounted onto it. While not street legal, Tim can power the couch to a maximum 8 miles-per-hour on flat roads though the neighborhood he lives in.”

How Does the ‘Couch Car’ Hold Up in the Frigid Weather?

In Kentucky, temperatures are low but manageable. When Verenich posted on in December 2025, the temperature remained between 55°F and 64°F, but night chills may have made this

Right now, Lexington is quite a bit colder, with temperatures in the mid 30s

Both Francis and Irwin appear in the video wearing cold weather gear, as the couch doesn’t have any external protection against the cold. That means that even driving at lower speeds, the couch car can get a little chilly on flat roads and roadways. That’s something that the man speaking to the couple noticed, saying, “ Gotta get cozy.”

Toward the end of the clip, the couple hopped in their vehicle and drove the couch, blowing the horn twice as a goodbye gesture.

How Can The Couple Drive This Vehicle On The Road?

Some commenters were wondering, how is this vehicle street legal? Well, the “couch car” has an ASM plate, which classifies it as a “Alternative-speed motorcycle.” Alternative speed motorcycles have to have an electronic or combustion motor. They also should have a fully enclosed chassis, with a door or entry point. Generally, these vehicles can drive up to 40 miles per hour on a roadway.

ASM vehicles require proof of insurance and a photo ID to authorize for the roadways, but the process is relatively straightforward. That makes it street legal and ready for quick drives around Lexington.
