There are over 16,000 car crashes per day in the United States. That’s a whole lot of carnage, coast to coast. But sometimes, crashes are just plain wild, like a sedan plowing head-first into a van full of prison inmates.

It sounds like something you might see in an action film. A crew knows their buddy is on a prison inmate transport and intends to crash their vehicle into it to free him at any cost. Well, while this story is no less dramatic, it doesn’t appear to be a breakout attempt.

According to a statement from the Wake County Sheriff’s Office, a Raleigh-area prison transport with 11 inmates and two guards on board was struck head-on by a white convertible. Fortunately, no one died in the wreck. But Wake County EMS transported all 11 inmates and the detention officers to a local hospital.

Police found the driver of the convertible, 45-year-old Andrew Wofford, at fault for the bizarre wreck. He’s currently looking at charges for careless and reckless driving, driving left of the center, and failure to reduce speed. 

It is, however, unclear whether Wofford was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time. All 11 inmates were accounted for, so no daring, movie-quality escape here. 

However, commentary on the department’s Facebook posting wasn’t what you might expect. Instead, like many of the most recent WCSO posts, angry commenters responded with retorts like “Did you shoot a dog again?”

The comments are in reference to an incident earlier this year wherein a deputy shot and killed a dog, Zelda, while entering a home during a civil summons visit.
