‘Awesome truck!’ 950 lb-ft International Harvester dually looks like it ate a Super Duty pickup
The Hummer was waiting at a stoplight. Its owner had swapped out the already enormous wheels and tires for cartoonishly large rims. He was revving the engine. The Toyota Prius waiting on his right crept forward, its driver hoping to escape. Then we rolled up on his left in what I can only describe as a semi truck with a pickup truck bed. The sound of our engine at idle drowned out the Hummer. Its driver looked up, looked back at his steering wheel, and settled down instantly.
The last light-duty pickup truck rolled off International Harvester’s factory line in 1975. But while I was growing up, one of my dad’s work trucks was a very special International Harvester. It was a heavy-duty tow rig with a 1980s four-door body. It also had a step-side pickup truck bed from a 1960s International truck—stretched in every direction. It could seat six comfortably, tow a full car hauler, and often drew more admirers at car shows than the classics on the trailer. We even discovered that with a set of ramps, you could roll a Bugatti Grand Prix race car from the 1930s right up into its bed as if it were a motorcycle. That made for a bizarre combination.
A custom 2016 International Harvester 7400 Series ‘pickup truck’

Maybe someone saw it at a car show and wanted their own. Someone in Florida has built a glorious modern version based on a 2016 International 7400 Series—currently listed on Cars & Bids. They actually found a “Set-Forward Axle” configuration International, which is engineered for snow plows but has a longer hood for more of a “pickup truck” look. This rig was even optioned with 4WD, which is relatively rare. It also has lockers, both front and rear.
The customizers also nabbed a bed and rear bumper from a Ford Super Duty and painted over the old lettering. They finished it off with a cab rack and in-cab storage. It even has generous under-bed toolboxes on both sides. The result is absolutely glorious.
This isn’t just a show truck. Inside that Super Duty bed, it hides a gooseneck trailer receiver. Its 9.3-liter turbodiesel makes 950 lb-ft of torque. It has an automatic transmission and cruise control. While towing, you’ll almost be measuring your fuel efficiency in gallons per mile. But with a 66-gallon fuel tank, you still have plenty of range.
Besides, it has just 2,800 miles. This truck is only getting started.
Doug DeMuro, founder of Cars & Bids, is normally a sports car and exotic vehicle guy. But he loves the unique International. “Now THIS is an awesome truck!”
