Despite a bridge so infamous it has its own T-shirt and Facebook page, another truck fell victim to what locals call the “Undefeated Champion.” This time, the bridge located along Independence Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri, destroyed a semi-truck hauling what appears to have been roofing materials.

Thankfully, while images show the semi-truck in seriously bad shape following the crash, the driver reportedly suffered no serious injuries. In fact, the Kansas City Police Department captioned photos of the accident by writing, “After all this, a truck driver has a non-life-threatening injury to his hand.”

“All this” refers to the massive amount of debris left behind by the semi-truck’s impact with the low-clearance railroad bridge. The roofing crane truck from Cornell Roofing & Sheet Metal, located less than five miles from the crash, reportedly didn’t heed a warning installed on the roadway in 2024.

Despite numerous efforts to prevent crashes, the bridge continues to reign

The Kansas City Star reports that dozens of trucks have hit the bridge since 2020. Kansas City installed plastic chimes to warn drivers of low clearance, but at least one of the safety devices was knocked down by a truck that was too tall in less than a week.

“We love our undefeated champion, but want to ensure drivers and goods are safe and the bridge gets a rest from its eating schedule for a while,” Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas wrote in a post on X at the time.

Kansas City actually first allocated funding to study the bridge and its many collisions in 2018, according to the Star. The bridge is owned by the Kansas City Terminal Railway Company.

The ‘truck-eating’ Kansas City bridge is a social media star

“Listen… sometimes you just need to feast,” the most recent post on one of the bridge’s Facebook pages read. Yes, the bridge is so notorious that it has multiple Facebook accounts.

“ALL HAIL THE MIGHTY INDEPENDENCE AVE BRIDGE!!!! The Noms were not enough this year so far, it needed a big meal!” someone joked in the comments.
