I’m pairing my driving gloves with a detective hat today. There is a Ford truck mystery to solve. For the most part, this automaker’s trucks are experiencing tremendous growth and success. However, one option can’t keep up with the top sellers.

One Ford Truck is struggling to keep up

Drum roll, please. The Ford truck we’re taking a closer look at today is the Ford Ranger. It isn’t keeping up with the smaller Ford Maverick or the larger Ford F-150.

In 2025, the F-Series sold 828,832 trucks. This includes Super Duty and Lightning models. Plus, the F-150 dominated the Chevrolet Silverado, Ram 1500, and Toyota Tundra.

The Ford Maverick sold 155,051 trucks in 2025. It dominated its class so hard that its closest competitor, the Hyundai Santa Cruz, was just discontinued. But the Ford Ranger only sold 70,960 trucks in 2025. It fell behind the Chevrolet Colorado and Toyota Tacoma.

Is it a reliability thing? According to J.D.Power, the 2025 F-150 has an above average reliability score of 86 out of 100. The 2025 Ford Maverick has a score of 85. RepairPal gives the 2025 Ford Ranger a score of four out of five. So it’s keeping up in quality.

Is the price off? The 2025 F-150 starts at $37,450, while the 2025 Maverick has an MSRP of $29,840. The 2025 Ranger has an MSRP of $33,350. Some critics say the F-150 offers more value at its higher price and the Maverick provides beneficial savings.

Apparently, the Ranger isn’t holding a candle to the Tacoma and Chevrolet. It’s a bit bland in comparison and is seen as less durable. It’s considered to be not as comfortable, and the tech is glitchy. So, it’s the Ford truck that lags behind rivals in its class.
