Talk about having a bad month. Not only did Jaylen Reed of the Houston Texans lose in the playoffs to the New England Patriots on Saturday, but he was also the victim of armed carjacking at his home. Reed was reportedly held at gunpoint by three masked men after pulling into his home’s garage on Jan. 4.

The 22-year-old rookie safety reportedly had rifles pointed at him during the carjacking by three men dressed in black, according to Harris County court documents and KPRC 2 News. The crooks reportedly told Jaylen Reed that they wanted “everything he had in the house.” It was unclear whether anything was taken from Reed’s home.

Two of the three carjackers drove off in Reed’s 2021 Jeep Cherokee Track Hawk, while a third departed on foot. When police located the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop, the driver of Reed’s car failed to comply. That led to a chase involving multiple police vehicles.

The stolen vehicle eventually crashed, and one of the suspects was taken into custody. During the pursuit, two patrol vehicles were damaged, including one that caught fire during the chase.

The 20-year-old driver of the stolen vehicle was charged with felony evading arrest or detention with a vehicle and felony unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. He was already on felony probation at the time of his arrest. His bond was set at $500,000 on each charge, totaling $1 million. The bond was set so high after prosecutors described the robbery as particularly aggravated. The two other carjackers remained at large.

Homeowner describes man accused of carjacking Texans rookie being caught in his backyard

Greenspoint homeowner Roberto Rodriguez told KHOU News that the driver of Reed’s carjacked vehicle was arrested in the middle of his backyard. He said that the robbery suspect broke his fence during his attempted escape.

Rodriguez wasn’t home at the time, but got the full story from one of his neighbors. “He said the police arrested one guy, so because the crossing from the side of the house and broke the fence, they arrested him in the middle of my backyard,” Rodriguez said.

Another resident of that neighborhood, Lakeya Payne, filmed the scene after hearing the crash. She described an overwhelming police presence.

“As soon as I walked out, I saw a man running into one of the houses right here. He was like shuffling, trying to get to the house, and then you see nothing but police cars like flying and lining up the neighborhood,” Payne said. She added, “They had an eye in the sky, trying to find him, so it was really, really hectic. I saw officers hop out right here with AR’s, I believe.”
