While looking at the list of the deadliest SUVs in America, I was in for a surprise. One extremely popular Honda SUV is higher up on the list. Overall, the brand has a great reputation for safety, but how did this model slip through the cracks?

One Honda SUV is deadlier than expected

The Honda SUV that ranks as one of the most deadly SUVs in America is the incredibly popular Honda CR-V. That seems surprising as Honda is known for being safe and reliable.

According to iSeeCars, the deadliest SUV is the Hyundai Venue. It has a fatal accident rate of 13.9 percent of cars per billion vehicle miles. It’s got a fatality rate that’s 6.3 times higher than the average rate of 2.8.

Then the Honda CR-V rings in as the second deadliest SUV with a fatal accident rate of 13.2 percent. It’s deadlier than the Tesla Model Y, which has a fatal accident rate of 10.6 percent.

Out of every type of vehicle, the CR-V ranks as the fifth deadliest model in America. It falls behind the Chevrolet Corvette, Mitsubishi Mirage, and Porsche 911. It’s also the first option on the list, and it isn’t a compact model or a sports car.

The CR-V is the only Honda model on the list. There are zero Subaru SUVs on the list and the first Toyota model pops upin twelfth place. The Toyota Corolla Hybrid has a 7.3 percent accident fatality rate.

To compile this list, iSeeCars analyzed fatality data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).

It lists cars from 2018 – 2022 with car crashes that resulted in at least one occupant fatality to determine the most dangerous cars on the roads in America today.

But the good news is that cars are safer than they have ever been thanks to advanced chassis designs, driver assist technology, and an array of airbags surrounding drivers and passengers.
