A Vancouver woman had quite a scare last Thursday. Late on Wednesday, she’d ordered about $100 in groceries through DoorDash, left a tip through the app, and put the interaction out of her mind. Then Thursday morning, the same driver pounded on her door.

Her first response: “Oh my gosh, you know, who the heck’s pounding on the door?” When she answered, the man said he was her DoorDash driver—from the night before. She asked, “OK, did I forget something?”

He responded that a tip through the app wasn’t good enough. He wanted cash as well.

Luckily for this Vancouver mother, she wasn’t alone. Her father was having breakfast with her. So Grandpa went to the door too, and he wasn’t messing around.

Grandpa to the rescue

Anthony Volino remembers the unwelcome visitor. “He was pretty loud. When I went to the door, I immediately smelled alcohol.”

He weighed his options to de-escalate the situation. “For a split second, I thought about giving the guy a couple of dollars, but when he again said, ‘I want my tip,’ that’s when I said, ‘Whoa, whoa.’ I said, ‘You need to leave.’”

That’s when the man at the door decided to get physical. During the ensuing scuffle, Volino realized the stranger had a gun in his waistband.

“When I felt the steel, my heart just sank. I was like, ‘Oh, God help me now.’” Whatever the actual reason, Volino ended up on top. “He tripped up against my wife’s car. And as he was on the ground, I came about right here and I leaned over and I cleared the handgun.”

Police arrived and identified the man as Robert Delehant. He’s been arrested on charges of felony harassment, DUI, and assault.

DoorDash fired Delehant and stated that the company “has a zero-tolerance policy for harassment of any kind. What happened was unacceptable and the Dasher involved was immediately deactivated. We have reached out to local law enforcement to support their investigation in any way we can.”
