Ford recalls 160k trucks and SUVs
Ford just issued a recall for rearview cameras issues in 2015 Super Duty trucks, Expeditions and Navigator SUVs, and Lincoln MKCs. This is an intriguing recall for several reasons. First off, just the sheer size of it. All of Ford’s recalls last week totaled 150k vehicles–combined. Secondly, Ford’s issued many 2025 recalls, but most have been for software. This is a hardware problem. Third, Ford is just now recalling some of the first rearview cameras it made. The government didn’t require rearview cameras until 2018.
2025 has been a banner year for Ford recalls. The automaker issued 24 recalls in the first 12 weeks of the year. Q2 hasn’t slowed down. And this isn’t a coincidence. Ford made the commendable decision to audit all of its previous software patch recalls. The unfortunate result is that it discovered many of these updates promised at the dealership weren’t installed correctly. Most of Ford’s 2025 recalls have been repeat recalls to fix these software problems.
The 2015 Ford truck and SUV backup camera issues
The 2015 Ford backup camera recall is different. Ford has multiple reports of a loose or damaged terminal header connector on the rearview camera’s printed circuit board, resulting in a blank or distorted image. The result is a car that can’t back up as safely as drivers expect. Ford doesn’t know of any accidents or injuries caused by the issue, but it must recall and examine every vehicle anyway. Here are the affected models:
- 2015 Ford Super Duty F-250, F-350, and F-450 models produced between September 13, 2013, and February 28, 2015
- 2015 Expedition SUVs built from January 16, 2014, to February 28, 2015
- 2015 Navigator SUVs produced between January 17, 2014, and March 31, 2015
- Lincoln MKC crossovers built from August 20, 2013, to March 31, 2015
Here’s the kicker: only “select” vehicles from each model are affected. Which ones? Well, I’d wager the ones without any rearview camera get off scot-free.
Congress originally passed the Cameron Gulbransen Kids Transportation Safety Act requiring rearview cameras in 2008. President Bush signed it, requiring the NHTSA to issue a standard by 2011. But it got so bogged down in bureaucracy, advocacy groups sued the U.S. DOT in 2014. The rule finally went into effect in May 2018.
Why is Ford recalling backup cameras that were never required?
That’s a long way of saying the 2015 Fords recalled for backup cameras never had to have working ones in the first place. But the NHTSA requires automakers to recall vehicles when any safety equipment the manufacturer included fails—not just equipment that was legally required. You’d hate to count on your F-350’s backup camera, only to find it’s not working today.
