1 State Fines Drivers $500 For Pumping Their Own Gas
One state in America isn’t like the others. There’s only one out of 50 that doesn’t allow drivers to pump their own gas. In fact, if you’re busted getting fuel instead of relying on a full-service model, you could face a $500 fine.
It’s illegal to pump your own gas in one state
You can listen to people brag about New Jersey being great due to full-service gas station models all you want. However, people in the other 49 states don’t understand what the big deal is, as they can fill up cars on their own.
New Jersey is the last state where it’s illegal to get your own fuel. But why is self-service banned at the pumps? According to Hoboken Girl, it’s due to the Retail Gasoline Dispensing Act. This took effect in 1949.
It states, “It shall be unlawful for any attendant to permit any person who is not an attendant to dispense fuel into the tank of a motor vehicle or any container.” But in some cases, you can pump your own diesel.
The claims that it’s a safety issue due to the fire hazards directly associated with dispensing fuel. So, it’s in the public interest that gasoline station operations have the control needed to ensure compliance with appropriate safety behaviors.
But in the 1940s, Irving Reingold opened a self-service gas station that had lower prices. So competitors turned to legislation for a self-service ban. If drivers get their own fuel in New Jersey, they could be fined about $500.
Self-service bills have been introduced over the years, but they fail to pass even though 60% of residents oppose the policy. Remember when Oregon made self-service legal in 2023?
We got to see so many memes, gifs, and videos of crazy mistakes made by first timers. Americans could use some laughs, so I hope New Jersey goes self-service soon.
