An explosion rocked the streets in front of the Trump Towers in Las Vegas on the first day of the year. At its heart, a Tesla Cybertruck was the origin of the blast. However, this wasn’t a case of a spontaneous EV fire or thermal runaway. No, this was an explosion fed by fuel, something the Cybertruck simply doesn’t use.

Police are investigating an exploding Tesla Cybertruck as possible terrorism, noting fuel accelerants

The Tesla Cybertruck is a common sight in Las Vegas. Businesses even resort to covering the angular, hulking electric pickup truck with vinyl wraps and advertisements. It’s just that attention-grabbing. Consequently, a 2024 Tesla Cybertruck isn’t an anomaly alongside the aureate Trump Towers in Las Vegas, Nevada.

However, this Cybertruck exploded within 15 seconds of pulling up to the gold-covered glass tower. What’s more, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is investigating the event not as an EV fire or battery explosion, but rather as a possible act of terrorism.

Tragically, it’s the second EV to make headlines related to possible acts of terrorism since the first of January. A 42-year-old U.S. Army veteran with probable ties to ISIS drove a Ford F-150 Lightning through a crowd of people on New Orleans’ historic Bourbon Street. Sadly, the attack left 15 people dead and many people injured.

In the case of the exploding Tesla Cybertruck, police discovered evidence of gasoline, camping fuel, and fireworks in the wreckage. The fuel-burning blast killed the vehicle’s only occupant. However, the inferno also injured seven people, per CBS News

Interestingly enough, a man rented the Cybertruck from a Colorado Turo account before it made the trek to Nevada. Now, the shortest highway distance between Denver and the Trump Towers in Las Vegas is about 750 miles. Tesla says the All-Wheel Drive EV truck will cover around 325 miles on a single charge.

That means the driver had to stop to charge the truck multiple times before reaching Las Vegas. Of course, Tesla says a new range extender will push the All-Wheel Drive model to around 445 miles, but that’s still nowhere near the journey between Denver and Las Vegas.
