On a random May night in Springfield, Colorado, things got a little weird. Around 11:30 p.m., local police spotted a car speeding. 52 in a 30 mph zone is enough to initiate a traffic stop. As the officer walked up, the driver tried to pull a fast one. He moved over to the passenger seat…and put his dog behind the wheel.

Yes, he tried to convince police the dog was driving

The officer saw the whole switch happen right in front of him. The man then climbed out of the passenger side and claimed he wasn’t the one driving.

Nice try, but no dice.

He showed “obvious signs” of being drunk. When the officer asked how much he’d had to drink, the man bolted. He took off running but only made it about 20 yards before the officer chased him down and stopped him.

The man told police he (and his dog) were driving from Las Animas to Pueblo but somehow ended up in Springfield. He didn’t just have alcohol to answer for. He also had two warrants out of Pueblo.

The Baca County Sheriff’s Office came to help with the situation. Officers took the man to the hospital, got him cleared, then drove him straight to Baca County Jail. They charged him with DUI, driving while ability impaired, driving under suspension, speeding 20–24 mph over the limit, and resisting arrest.

As for the pup…

The Springfield Police posted this back in May 2023, when the DUI traffic stop occurred: “The dog does not face any charges and was let go with just a warning.” The hound went home with someone the driver knew.
