Mitsubishi has made some of the best cars to buy for decades now. However, things have slowed down, and its lineup is much smaller these days. Sadly, Mitsubishi is also tied up in a nasty class action suit with buyers of some of its most popular models over a pesky airbag issue. Now, the struggling company has agreed to a hefty settlement to make things right with impacted buyers.

Mitsubishi is settling its massive class action suit

Mitsubishi still makes some of the best cars to buy, depending on who you ask. Sadly, this doesn’t mean the automaker hasn’t had its share of troubles over the years. Now, according to Top Class Actions, the automaker is agreeing to fork over $8.5 million to people who own some of its most popular cars. This settlement will put an end to a rather lengthy class action suit.

So, what is the class action suit over? Well, plaintiffs in the suit say that Mitsubishi used defective ZF-TRW airbag control units in some of its vehicles. Specifically, this includes the 2013-2017 Mitsubishi Lancer,  2013-2015 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, 2013-2015 Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart, 2013-2016 Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback, and the 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander.

The class action suit is vital because this airbag defect could prevent it from being deployed in the case of a car accident. Of course, the airbag is one of the most important safety features a car has. This means many owners of these cars have been at risk. With the settlement, impacted owners can get a cash payment of up to $250. The settlement also includes a vehicle inspection. The deadline for exclusion and objection is February 27th. The final hearing for approval of the settlement is April 7th. Owners have until May 8th to submit a claim.
