Car theft is a significant problem, and not just for Kia and Hyundai owners. Over one million vehicles went missing in the U.S. in 2023. However, the thieves don’t usually steal the cars and bring them back. This happened to one Honda owner in Virginia when his car went missing and showed up again multiple times.

Car theft doesn’t usually involve returning the car

People all over the world fear car theft. Sure, many insurance policies will cover a stolen car, but it’s a hassle no one wants to deal with. According to Live 5 News, David Basye, out of Virginia, had his Honda Insight stolen multiple times. The funny thing is it was the same man each time. Additionally, each time, the man brought the vehicle back the same night.

David lives in Stafford, Virginia, and parks his Honda Insight in the parking lot of his townhouse. The car theft first happened on October 6th of this year. David admits to committing the cardinal sin of leaving the car unlocked and having a spare key in the glove compartment. After noticing the car missing and then reappearing, David installed a trail camera.

From here, David noticed that he became a victim of car theft again the following night. However, the car was back in his parking spot an hour later. According to David, “I saw it back because I was sitting in my living room, and I proceeded to chase him down the road. I just screamed and told him to come here, and he just ran.”

From here, David invested in a surveillance system. The car theft stopped for a while but then started up again. Luckily, police officers were able to catch the thief in the act of taking the Honda Insight. The man who stole the car repeatedly is named G’avontai Mul-Key, and he’s 22 years old. Regarding the situation, David says, “They were using this as a joyride, getting where they wanted and coming back, and I had no knowledge of it.”

The car thief did not have a driver’s license and is facing multiple charges. They include unauthorized use of a vehicle, obstruction of justice, and grand larceny.
