Recent Colorado car theft recovery operation led to multiple arrests and felony charges for suspected teen thieves
Everybody knows that car theft has been a significant problem for a long time. Luckily, law enforcement agencies are using their expertise to come up with ways to recover stolen vehicles. Recently, a bit of a sting operation located multiple cars and put three vehicle thieves behind bars for their crimes after one of the drivers tried to evade a traffic stop.
Car theft causes unknown harm to vehicle owners all over the world
According to The Gazette, police officers in Colorado arrested three car theft suspects on November 18th. Notably, these three teenagers were reportedly responsible for four missing vehicles in Colorado Springs in recent months. This happens to be the latest arrest in the “Beat Auto Theft Through Law Enforcement” operation, which has proven quite successful in the area.
The report didn’t make the situation leading to the arrest of the car theft suspects clear, but it seems they tried to evade a traffic stop. One of the three teenagers arrested was Mykael Weathington, 18. He is being charged with felony vehicle eluding, motor vehicle theft, resisting arrest, and possession of a gun with a defaced serial number.
The second car theft suspect is James Penny, 19. He faces charges of unlawful possession of a concealed 9 mm gun. Police also arrested Donivaul Collins, 18. His charges are for unlawful possession of an AR-15.
So far, this police-led operation has proven successful in Colorado Springs. In September alone, 50 arrests were made for car theft, which only took five deployments. Vehicle thefts in September are 26% lower than in August. They are also 50% lower than they were in July. The car theft numbers this month are also lower than in previous years.
