South Carolina driver is facing charges after sending a fake $8k medical bill to Geico
Car insurance providers offer an essential service to drivers. Yes, it comes at a cost, but having coverage can prevent people from being burdened by insurmountable debt. Still, many people commit car insurance fraud every year. Recently, one man was arrested for the crime, and now he is facing some substantial charges for allegedly scamming Geico.
Car insurance providers often have ways to detect fraud
According to WISTV, police in Lexington County recently arrested Renwick Maurice Bates, 56, for committing fraud against one of the most popular car insurance providers. Specifically, he is being accused of submitting a “forged and fabricated” medical bill from the Lexington Medical Center to secure a reimbursement of $8,242 for injuries sustained in a car accident.
As mentioned, car insurance providers can often tell when drivers are attempting to defraud them. However, it was easier in this situation. The medical bill that Renwick is said to have submitted to Geico was dated April 31st, which is not a valid date. Now, as of April 16th, authorities are charging the man with forgery of less than $10,000. He also faces a charge for presenting a false claim for an insurance payment exceeding $2,000. They booked him into the Lexington County Detention Center.
Regarding the case, individual car insurance providers don’t adjudicate claims of fraud. Of course, they submit evidence, but the South Carolina Department of Insurance will oversee the trial. It’s unclear what punishment the man will face if they find him guilty of submitting the fake letter. This is a developing story.
