It’s true, Toyota SUVs have a great reputation for dependability. However, not every make and model is created equal. In fact, some model years can have significantly different reliability scores. For example, there’s one Toyota RAV4 model that needs avoiding like the plague. 

Avoid the 2019 Toyota RAV4 

If you’re searching for a solid used Toyota RAV4 model year, watch out for options from 2019. This is when the fifth generation launched, which is pretty reliable overall. However, the changeover from 2018 to 2019 models didn’t exactly go well. 

According to CarComplaints, this is the most problematic RAV4 model in the SUV’s recent history. Drivers are constantly reporting expensive issues that they’ve had to shell out thousands to correct. 

For example, the 2019 RAV4 has problems relating to lurching at slower speeds, hesitating to accelerate, and experiences delayed transmission shifts. 

Reportedly, a technical service bulletin suggests reprogramming the electronic control module, but drivers are still experiencing issues. Some have spent roughly $20,000 for a permanent fix. 

There are also reports of engine problems related to excessive oil consumption, groaning while accelerating, leaking coolant, suddenly stalling, and defective coolant valves. 

Many owners shared complaints about the brakes as well. There is a widely known issue related to the brake booster pump that may lead to failure. 

Also, the braking sensors were prone to failing. Other drivers reported that their brake calipers got stuck and faced brake fluid leaks. 

Electrical problems are another source of complaints. Fractured cylinder heads could cause coolant to leak causing braking system malfunctions. Another driver shared that water leaking from the sunroof causes the airbag electrical system to fail. 

When this model launched, there were issues that needed to be worked out. Models between 2020 and 2024 seemingly have way less complaints.
