The Saab 900 Turbo Was the First Modern Hot Hatch

When the original Volkswagen GTI helped start the front-wheel-drive hot hatch segment, very few production vehicles had turbos. Only high-performance cars, or rally homologation specials, could afford to house them. Today, though, turbocharging is basically a hot hatch requirement. The Fiat 500 Abarth, Hyundai Veloster N, Civic Type R, and VW GTI all have turbocharged …

There’s a Big Difference Between the Porsche 911 GT3 and GT2

Although the base Carrera model is almost all the car you’ll ever need, there’s more than one Porsche 911. And we’re not just talking about the different model generations. In addition to the Carrera, the modern 911 lineup includes the S, GTS, Turbo, Targa, Cabriolet, and AWD ‘4’ models. And, for those interested in the …

A C5 Corvette Is a Great Budget Race Car

While the latest mid-engine C8 is an honest supercar competitor, the other Corvette generations have their own charms. True, older ‘Vettes don’t have the latest tech or as nice of an interior. However, as with other used performance cars like the Porsche Cayman and BMW 3-Series, they’re significantly cheaper. Enough that they’re on-par in budget …

The 996 Turbo: The Best Affordable Used Porsche 911

Although it makes well-regarded vehicles, not all Porsches have been trouble-free. In particular, the 996-gen Porsche 911 has a black-sheep reputation, due to its dreaded IMS bearing. However, even notably reliable or high-end cars, like the Toyota 4Runner, Nissan Skyline GT-R, and Mitsubishi Montero have had engine problems. Though, as with the contemporary Cayman, the …

2 Rare Classic Shelby GT350 Mustangs Are Coming up for Sale

While it’s sadly set to bow out soon, the current Ford Shelby GT350 Mustang is a worthy heir to the original’s name. The first Ford Shelby GT350 Mustang came on the heels of the original Cobra and Daytona Coupe. It was the Cobra and GT350 that established Carroll Shelby’s relationship with Ford. A relationship that …

Honda Tweaks the 2020 Civic Type R Before It Goes Hybrid

Almost 2 decades after the Acura Integra Type R wowed US enthusiasts, Honda finally brought the Civic Type R over. It immediately raised the bar over previous high points like the Civic Mugen Si and Mazdaspeed 3. And it’s arguably what inspired Hyundai to produce the Veloster N. Now, just like Hyundai’s updating the Veloster …

The Toyota FJ Cruiser Is the Best Used Toyota SUV You Can Buy

Even if you’re not into off-roading or overlanding, a Toyota SUV is usually the way to go where reliability’s concerned. True, some of that reliability stems from a lack of significant design updates. However, that means, for something like a 4Runner or Sequoia, buying used is just as good as buying new. And besides saving …

Harley-Davidson Could Learn From Hummer

Although it’s finally found itself a new CEO, the news from Harley-Davidson still isn’t encouraging. The company’s sales were struggling even before the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, Harley’s planned adventure and streetfighter bikes have yet to materialize. And it doesn’t help that the electric LiveWire is priced significantly higher than many other electric motorcycles. Harley-Davidson has …

The 2022 GMC Hummer Is Getting Another Jeep-Like Feature

Although its release date is delayed, GMC continues to tease elements of the upcoming Hummer electric pickup. We’ve learned it’ll offer up to 3 electric motors, and go 0-60 in 3 seconds. But the 2022 GMC Hummer isn’t only worrying for Tesla, Rivian, and Bollinger. Aspects of its design, particularly the grille, recall some of …

The $4700 Royal Enfield Himalayan Is a Good Cheap Adventure

You don’t have to spend a lot of money to get an enjoyable motorcycle. Bikes like the Honda Super Cub and Yamaha MT-03 may not be fast, but they’re still fun to ride. That’s part of Royal Enfield’s appeal. The Interceptor and Continental GT 650 ape classic-styled bikes like the Triumph Bonneville and Thruxton at …

Would the Suzuki Jimny Really Fit in on US Roads?

Although it’s now primarily known in the US for motorcycles, Suzuki did once sell cars here. And elsewhere in the world, it still does. One, in particular, the Suzuki Jimny mini-SUV, has been remarkably well-received. It’s been tuned, turned into Bronco look-a-likes, and taken on heavyweights like the G-Wagon. However, it’s still not available in …

Only Buy a Lexus GS F If It’s Used

Although it’s better known as a luxury brand, Lexus has made several performance cars in the past. The Lexus IS F sport sedan was one of the first; a match for the contemporary BMW M3. However, although the succeeding F-badged models were genuinely sporty, they were also in some ways dated. The LFA supercar, for …

Ford Is the Worst at Telling Parents About Teen Safety Features in New Study

With more vehicles offering extensive safety features, it’s more important than ever that drivers understand how they work. Particularly teen drivers, who rely upon their parents to choose a safe car. However, while these advanced driver-assistance features can reduce parental worries, they can also cause headaches. Especially if, as a recent IIHS study says about …

Nikola Motors’ Hydrogen Semi-Trucks Are One Step Closer to Production

Although they have some advantages over battery-powered EVs, hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles still have a ways to go. And a lot of their issues, especially with semi-trucks, is down to access. EV fast chargers are still not ubiquitous—hydrogen refueling stations are even rarer. Really, California is the only place in the US where they work. However, …

Cake’s Electric Motorcycles Are Perfect for Minimalist Fun

Little noise and ease of maintenance are just some of the benefits electric motorcycles provide. Kawasaki’s manual-equipped prototype aside, these bikes make riding very approachable even for newbies. And they’re genuinely quick—faster than some electric cars. However, there are only a few truly affordable electric motorcycles. The LiveWire, for instance, maybe an excellent bike, but …
2015 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo Final Edition

You Absolutely Shouldn’t Pay $125k for a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo

There really isn’t a bad year for the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo. Although like many high-performance cars, it requires careful maintenance, the Evo is arguably more reliable than its Subaru rival. However, owing to its Fast and Furious credentials, many ended up tuned to destruction or crashed. As a result, all Mitsubishi Lancer Evo models hold …

Atlanta’s Considering Limited Legal Street Racing

Beyond just requiring careful car prep, racing also usually takes place on special-purpose tracks or courses. However, with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic emptying roads, more people are starting to treat streets as their own personal racetracks. That means more speeding tickets, and more chances for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians to get injured or worse. But, …
1954 Mercedes 300SL Gullwing

Why No One Makes an Authentic Mercedes 300SL Gullwing Replica

Because rising values often keep vintage vehicles stuck in the garage, classic car and motorcycle replicas offer economical experience alternatives. For example, instead of an original Shelby Cobra, you can get Factory Five’s kit. Some, like Pur Sang’s Bugattis, are replicas in the truest sense, i.e., made with the same methods as the originals. Others, …

The Brand-New Classic Hybrid Allard J2X Is Not What You Think

Although today their tech is understandably dated, classic cars were genuine pioneers in their day. Lancia alone helped introduce features like unibody construction, independent suspension, and full electrical systems. Modern AWD systems have Audi to thank. Even hybrid vehicles are older than many realize—Porsche’s founder created a functioning one in 1900. But ‘hybrid’ didn’t always …

The Norton Commando Is an Overlooked Triumph Bonneville Rival

Although other bikemakers make retro-styled motorcycles, Triumph has one of the most extensive lineups of such models. There’s the Thruxton café racer, the off-road-capable Scrambler, and perhaps most iconic, the Triumph Bonneville. Today, there are other brands, like Royal Enfield, which are starting to offer alternatives to the British bike. But back in the 60s …
