Matthew Skwarczek started blogging in 2015 and focuses his writing on motorcycles and engineering science. A graduate of Northwestern University, where he earned his Master’s in Chemical Engineering, Matthew served as an applications engineer for BASF before joining MotorBiscuit in 2019.
In Matthew’s words, the visceral nature of riding requires you to be in the moment. Combined with his fascination in the analytics surrounding the building and designing of cars and bikes, both modern and classic, you’ll find his voice blends functionality and phenomena. He rides motorcycles and bicycles often, photographing them as well.
Matthew has contributed to Oppositelock and is now an alumnus. He plays Dungeons & Dragons and reads sci-fi and fantasy in his spare time, and appreciates the works of Peter Egan, Sam Smith, Brandon Sanderson, and Alex Goy.
The M3 may be fun, but like some of BMW’s other sporty cars, it’s a bit compromised for daily-driving. And older examples can be expensive to maintain. That being said, some older models are not only reliable, they’re also well-regarded. One of those is the E46 3-Series. And, just like Alpina offers luxurious M alternatives, …
Cleaning your car properly is a surprisingly important part of regular maintenance. It doesn’t just keep your vehicle looking good, though. Improper washing techniques can lead to rust because they damage your paint. There are actually quite a few things that can damage your car’s paint over time. UV rays, chemicals, even rainwater. And, as …
Yet another company has joined in the electric pickup truck segment. SAIC joins the likes of Bollinger, Tesla, Rivian, Nikola, and GMC in offering its own spin on battery-powered pickups. Normally, more competition is a good thing, especially for consumers. However, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has created a lot of uncertainty for the automotive world …
Newly sharpened for 2020, the Honda Civic Type R has proven to be one of the best hot hatches on sale today. It’s a fitting successor to the moniker started in the US by the Acura Integra Type R. However, today’s CTR approaches performance from a different perspective than the originals, eschewing high-revving naturally-aspirated engines …
The next few years will see the Ford Mustang go through quite a few changes. For one, it might offer a hybrid powertrain. But arguably the bigger news is, while the Shelby GT500 is staying, the GT350 and Bullitt trims are done after 2020. In their place will be the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach 1. …
While built-in navigation is quickly becoming common in cars, very few motorcycles offer it. Those that do are typically expensive long-distance touring bikes, which are designed to tackle extended rides. But even if you only stick to known roads, having a helpful guide home isn’t a bad idea. Plus, Rebelle Rally and similar situations aside, …
To call the reception of Acura’s new TLX ‘positive’ is a bit of an understatement. Even as the Japanese automaker cancels underperforming models, the new sports sedan is getting a lot of Internet praise. Especially the higher-performance Acura TLX Type S. The ‘Type S’ moniker was previewed by the Civic Type R’s chief engineer as …
Campers and RVs may be fun, but for overlanding, you need something a bit more compact. If you’ve got a pickup truck, you can get a bed-mounted camper. For other vehicles, there are foldable rooftop tents. However, to make them stow-able, these tents are usually made of special fabrics, even if they have a hardtop. …
In-between high-end diecast models and Hot Wheels lie Lego’s approachable kits. Want to recreate your favorite Fast and Furious scene? You can build Dom’s Dodge Charger. Like Lupin the 3rd? There’s a Lego version of the classic Fiat 500. The kits also mean you can own, at least in scale form, vehicles you’d never be …
It’s never pleasant when your car’s suffering quality problems, especially if it’s a high-end model. And Tesla, despite its recent improvements, still lags behind some brands when it comes to delivering flaw-free vehicles. Not even the Tesla Model Y, which in many ways shows the brand’s growing maturity, is immune. However, it seems that some …
It’s safe to say few of us will ever get to drive a Rolls-Royce. The British brand’s vehicles are priced on the same level as houses after all. But that price comes with a commensurate level of luxury and ability. The Rolls-Royce Cullinan may cost as much as $500k, but it’s more capable off-road than …
Ducati may hog the limelight, but Italy is home to quite a few storied motorcycle brands. Ducati itself wouldn’t be where it is without Cagiva’s help, for instance. Energica has cornered Italy’s electric bike scene. Then there’s Moto Guzzi, perhaps the oldest European motorcycle company still in business. The V7 III neo-classic bike may be …
If you’re in the market for a relatively-new performance car, Hertz’s recent financial troubles may be a blessing. Missing from that list, though, is the Ford Mustang. Hertz is selling its special-edition Camaro ZL1s and Corvette Z06s, as well as a host of luxury cars. But the Mustangs it’s offering aren’t any different than your …
James Bond’s usually seen behind the wheel of an Aston Martin. However, motorcycles have also featured in the fictional British spy’s adventures. Though the bad guys are usually the riders, Bond himself has taken to 2 wheels on occasion. Most recently, in the upcoming film No Time to Die, aka ‘Bond 25.’ To commemorate it, …
Although they’ve added luxury and performance, pickup trucks are mostly designed around utility. That hasn’t stopped luxury and style-focused carmakers from building them, even if only as concepts. The Lamborghini LM002, for instance, was a pickup with a V12. Mercedes offered E-Class utes, as has Mini. BMW’s built several one-off pickups using the X7 and …
Although it can make some truly luxurious vehicles, BMW hasn’t always lived up to its reputation. Even the high-performance BMW M cars have sometimes given up something to the competition. And, although that M badge adds speed, that sometimes comes at the cost of daily comfort. Fortunately, just like there are storied Porsche tuners, there …
Besides the Corvair-based Greenbrier, Chevrolet’s panel vans tend to be less about quirks than practicality. Though, admittedly the Greenbrier’s rear-engine layout was chosen for practical reasons. However, panel vans’ cousins, wagons and minivans, have shown that practicality can come with attractive design or even high-power performance. The retro-styled Chevy HHR may have been more car …
Even though it’s struggling now, Harley-Davidson is still the longest-lived American motorcycle company around. Indian was founded at about the same time, but it went out of business before being brought back. However, in the early days of the motorcycle, Indian and Harley were just 2 of many competing brands. And there was one in …
Although leaking oil is a clear sign of trouble, not every vehicle maintenance item makes itself none quite so easily. For example, clutch wear is a gradual process. And timing belts last so long, some owners may forget about them entirely. Until they break, of course. However, maintenance doesn’t have to be just about maintaining …
Although it now specializes in EVs, Volvo originally purchased Polestar with the intent of making it a performance division. Think BMW’s M, or Mercedes-AMG, only Swedish. And just like those German brands, Polestar didn’t limit itself to just tuning sedans. After all, while Volvo makes luxurious cars and SUVs, it’s perhaps best-known for wagons. That’s …
