What’s the worst in-flight etiquette you can reasonably expect on a lengthy flight? Maybe a loud, drunk passenger on the airplane? Perhaps a classic “Karen” complaint about the in-flight entertainment? Well, a passenger on a United Airlines flight has damn near everything beat by peeing on a sleeping traveler on a long flight over the Pacific Ocean.

A business class passenger on an oceanic United Airlines flight urinated on a fellow passenger and earned a lifetime ban

Jerome Gutierrez boarded United Airlines Flight 189 from San Francisco, California to Manila in the Philippines. He settled in for the 15-hour flight and fell asleep. Horrifyingly, he awoke to find a total stranger urinating on him about four hours into the flight. Not that being a stranger makes it any better or worse. United Airlines confirmed a ban for the urinating passenger on future flights.

In an attempt to keep the peace, United Airlines flight attendants reportedly instructed Gutierrez not to confront the offender. They feared a confrontation would turn violent. Fortunately, Gutierrez didn’t have to sit through the entire flight in his befouled clothes; flight attendants offered him a set of pajamas for the remainder of the flight. Still, without shower facilities or a change of seat, it’s a pretty nasty way to travel.

Gutierrez’s stepdaughter says the way the airline handled the incident is as ‘disgusting’ as the event itself

Granted, the incident is reprehensible and foul. However, Gutierrez’s stepdaughter, Nicole Cornell was seething about more than the event itself. Cornell told the Bay Area publication SFGATE that her stepfather “was surprised when he looked at the man and thought he was dreaming.” As for the disgusting specifics, Cornell said that Gutierrez was “soaked from his stomach down in that man’s urine.”

The fact that the aircraft continued on its path without diverting or returning to its California airport of origin angered Cornell. “I am so disgusted and in shock with how United Airlines handled this! That is a biohazard, and the plane should’ve turned around to address this issue.”
