One vehicle is dropping the ball when it comes to the Subaru reputation of being prepared for any challenge. For years, every Subaru SUV came with standard all-wheel drive. But in an effort to reduce pricing, it costs extra with its newest option. 

One Subaru SUV doesn’t have standard AWD 

But you pull the trigger on the 2026 Subaru Uncharted, be sure to determine if you actually need AWD. This model is the only Subaru SUV in the lineup that doesn’t provide standard AWD. Plus, the Uncharted is an electric vehicle. 

Because the $7,500 federal EV tax credit ended, the automaker needed to find a new way to keep this electric SUV affordable.

According to AutoGuide, the Premium FWD model is the entry-level option. It has an MSRP of $34,995. The Sport model starts at $36,445 for the FWD model. Adding AWD costs $4,800, increasing the starting price to $41,245. 

So overall, upgrading to a model with AWD costs about $6,250. The FWD models have 221 hp and an estimated range of about 300 miles. Adding AWD gives you the dual-motor setup with 338 hp and an estimated range of 285 miles. 

For off-roading, this Subaru SUV has a ground clearance of 8.3 inches and unique suspension tuning for stability. AWD adds X-Mode for improved off-roading capabilities with Grip Control. 

With a DC fast charger, you can charge the Solterra from 10 to 80% in about 28 minutes. You can fully recharge the batteries in about seven hours with a Level 2 charger.
