The 1.4 millionth Subaru Legacy completes its 36 year run
Say goodbye to a familiar friend as it drives off into the sunset. The Subaru Legacy is officially gone. It was discontinued in 2025, and production of this once popular sedan is done. It’s another car that was abandoned by buyers as SUVs exploded.
Say goodbye to the Subaru Legacy
In what may have been an emotional day for some, the Subaru Legacy went out to pasture. The last sedan rolled off the production line. Now the plant in Indiana is being repurposed to build more popular SUVs like the Subaru Crosstrek and three-row Ascent.
However, the Legacy is a car with a lot of history that deserves to be remembered. For example, Subaru began building the car in 1989 in America. It was the first Subaru model to ever be manufactured here.
During its 36-year run, it produced 1.4 million sedan and wagon models. It arrived as a car and a wagon. It arrived with game-changing features like four-wheel disc brakes, a fully independent suspension, and full-time 4×4.
As the years passed, the wagon side was dropped as the sedan version soldiered on. The Legacy Wagon was crucial in laying the groundwork for the Outback. According to Subaru, 94% of Legacy models sold in the past 10 years are still on the road today.
You can probably still find a few Legacy models at your local dealership. If the Legacy isn’t your style, Subaru still has the WRX and BRZ. Although I wonder how long they will last.
As drivers continue to switch from sedans to SUVs, Subaru is also revising its lineup to meet the demand. It’s also building electric vehicles, such as the Solterra and Trailseeker.
