Would you jump out of an SUV traveling at highway speeds to save your life? Police officers share that one woman is likely only still alive because she leapt from a vehicle into traffic on Highway 101.
She was stabbed multiple times while riding in a vehicle heading northbound in Salinas around midnight. Then she opened the passenger door and jumped to the pavement. California Highway Patrol and Salinas police officers found her bleeding on the pavement.
They requested emergency medical assistance as she shared information about her attacker and how she managed to escape. She was taken to the Natividad Medical Center, the County’s Level 2 trauma center.
According to CBS News, detectives identified the suspect as 19-year-old Evelio Ramirez Ruiz. He was driving a black 2017 Kia Sorento.
Lanes of traffic were shut down for a few hours as investigators conducted an investigation. Ruiz was arrested later during a separate incident and was linked to the stabbing.
He faces charges for attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, false imprisonment, attempted kidnapping, and aggravated mayhem.
California Highway Patrol Captain Eric Zivic shares, “This was a violent and disturbing attack, and the victim’s actions likely saved her life.”
He adds, “Our detectives worked quickly and collaboratively with our law enforcement partners to identify and arrest the suspect.”
