Waymo taxi gets confused and blocks emergency responders
There was a mass shooting at a bar in Austin, Texas, that’s linked to potential terrorism. During the shooting, a driverless Waymo taxi was en route to pick up a passenger on West Sixth Street.
Then it got confused as emergency responders attempted to reach the scene. It completely blocked the street as an ambulance and a police car tried to squeeze by. This added chaos backed up traffic in the crowded, popular bar district.
According to Axios, the car slowly inches forward as a police officer pulls up behind it. Then the officer exits his vehicle and talks to the company through the car’s speaker system. After at least a minute of thinking, the vehicle finally drives away and enters a parking garage.
Austin-Travis County EMS Spokesperson Captain Christa Stedmans shares, “A driverless vehicle was stopped in the area while our crews were responding to this morning’s mass shooting, and it did briefly interfere with access for one ambulance.”
But first responders are trained on how to manage driverless vehicles that become stopped or unresponsive. The officer followed established protocol to address the situation.
This raises questions over how autonomous vehicles operate near chaotic emergency situations. Is the technology fully prepared for unpredictable, high-stakes situations with lives at stake?
First responders are prepared for this type of scenario. These types of situations can be quickly resolved with a significant impact on patient care or overall response situations.
