Volkswagen recalls over 60,000 VW, Audi vehicles over potentially deadly rollaways
Volkswagen Group issued a recall for three EV models across the Volkswagen and Audi brands. Unfortunately, the recall mentions 60,490 EVs for a faulty transmission gear lever indication on the display. The notice states that the display and parking brake issue could lead to vehicles rolling away, increasing the risk of a deadly crash.
Recent recalls name Volkswagen and Audi EVs for an increased ‘risk of a crash and a vehicle roll away’
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) acknowledged a Volkswagen Group recall for 60,490 vehicles across the United States. According to the recall notice, affected vehicles may experience a display failure that could put the vehicle in danger of rolling away.
“Failure to display the gear position may result in a vehicle rollaway if the parking brake is not engaged, increasing the risk of a crash,” Volkswagen Group’s notification letter to the NHTSA read. The “N” gear indicator may not display on the vehicle’s instrumentation. As a result, the operator may not be able to fully engage or confirm the status of the parking brake.
However, the notice pertains to electric vehicles (EVs) only, with none of the brand’s ICE or hybrid models on the list. Instead, the recall names 50,971 Volkswagen ID.4s in the United States and 5,475 units in Canada. In addition to the popular Volkswagen EV, 9,519 Audi Q4 e-trons and Q4 e-tron Sportbacks made the list.
As with other recalls, the remedy will be cost-free for owners. Volkswagen Group says it will install an updated brake control unit software in affected vehicles. While the automaker plans on informing owners individually, drivers can confirm their recall status online.
| Make and model impacted | Model years | Number of units (US) |
|---|---|---|
| Volkswagen ID.4 | 2021-2023 | 50,971 |
| Audi Q4 e-tron | 2022-2023 | 7,492 |
| Audi Q4 e-tron Sportback | 2022-2023 | 2,027 |
If you suspect your vehicle is affected by the recent recall, you can use the NHTSA’s lookup tool with your EV’s VIN, license plate number, or year, make, and model information. Notifications are due to reach owners by April 25, 2025.
