Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. issued a nationwide recall of approximately 44,000 ID.4 EVs. The recall is due to high-voltage battery modules that may overheat and cause a fire.

These high-voltage battery cell modules may contain misaligned electrodes. In certain situations, a misaligned electrode in the HV battery cell can cause a fire, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

This recall affects model year 2023-2025 Volkswagen ID.4 electric vehicles produced between September 2, 2022, and April 10, 2025. The battery cell modules involved in the recall were supplied by SK Battery America Inc. Only ID.4 vehicles produced by Volkswagen in Chattanooga, Tennessee, are affected by this issue. Vehicles included in this recall lack Self-Discharge Detection software.

What triggered this recall of Volkswagen ID.4 EVs?

Volkswagen was informed of a thermal event in Illinois on January 18, 2024, and two others in California on July 2, 2024, and October 6, 2024. On December 6, 2024, Volkswagen was notified of a thermal event in Utah, and on August 15, 2025, it was informed of another in Colorado.

Two of the incidents occurred while an ID.4 was charging at a Level 3 DC charger. Two others occurred with parked vehicles that were not charging. A driver was operating a vehicle when a fifth event occurred.

Volkswagen and the NHTSA advise affected Volkswagen ID.4 owners to (1) set their vehicle’s high-voltage battery system to a 80% state of charge limitation, (2) avoid using Level 3 DC chargers, and (3) park their vehicles outdoors immediately after charging and not leave their vehicles charging indoors overnight.

Customers may experience a loss of range and/or performance if the recall condition exists in the vehicle. Volkswagen advises ID.4 owners with concerns about their vehicle to have an authorized Volkswagen dealer diagnose it. They may also contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298 and reference recall number 93EA.
